In 2018, it was a bombshell that hit the hockey world when Erik Karlsson was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the San Jose Sharks and a year later the Sharks also gave Karlsson a very lucrative contract worth $ 11,5 million ($ 114 million) per season for eight years that made the Swede one of the NHL's highest-paid players.

He then became one of two right-handed star defensemen in the Sharks as Brent Burns was already on the team. However, the signing of Erik Karlsson has not led to any success for San Jose as they have only reached the playoffs once in the four years that Karlsson has played in California.
