Not a good offer for Cernak at all. If they move him it’s for more than a 5th round draft pick and a 2nd.

If Julien BriseBois were to trade Erik Cernak, he'd get a far better offer than this.

I agree with you analysis. This team needs a good coach, first and foremost.

Why do winnipeg fans keep posting this schmidt trade? There is zero chance you're getting anything of value for him with that contract

You are entitled to your opinion, but he has been traded twice for this exact return over the past 2 years with this exact same contract... The first time as a cap dump and the second time as a reclamation project. He was much better this year so the reason why it keeps getting posted is it's pretty clear that the going rate for him is a 3rd round pick.

I get you don't know who Chisholm is and he's only really played 2 NHL games so far so it's unlikely you've seen him play unless for some reason you follow the Manitoba Moose. He is good and is a left shot but can play both sides. Since he can play the right side I don't actually think the Jets would move him just yet but he is part of our logjam of left D prospects where we likely need to trade a couple.

I do think that when making a trade from a deep area of your organization you generally need to move a better known prospect/player and bet on the lesser known guys yourself. I get why you don't like it. What if Chisholm became Logan Stanley instead? The OP has him relegated to the pressbox to play Samberg and Heinola ahead of him and also moves Dillon in a sperate move.

Logan Stanley is only a year younger than Cernak. I still wouldn’t move Cernak for him. It’d have to be a higher quality piece imo otherwise why would JBB do it. I think if he shopped Cernak he’d get a better offer than the one above, but that’s just me.

We could re-sign Alex Edler for less than Brenden Dillon's cap hit, and we would probably get the same results without having to expend assets to acquire Dillon. We probably wouldn't even exchange a second-round draft pick for Dillon, let alone a second and a third.

And after being traded twice in 2 years it's become apparent he's not good and not worth his contract. Why else would winnipeg want to get rid of him if he has value since they're pretty devoid of defensive talent. Yzerman is careful with his cap space and giving out term. There is no chance he's paying to take on this deal

It doesn't have to be Detroit, just it seems like Detroit is looking for a Vet LHD to hold down the fort until Edvinsson and Wallinder are ready, which will be right when his contract expires so it works from that sense.

He's been good with the Jets but the team underperformed this year and he is overpaid for what he brings, hence the 3rd round pick and not a 1st or 2nd + prospect sort of return. It's good to be cautious with the cap but it only really matters if you're ever going to be close to it. You guys have $40M to sign 9 players so you can afford to overpay Schmidt by a million or 2. It'll just be empty capspace otherwise.

I'm not going to change your mind as it's clearly made up but most other red wings fans think this is a fair trade. You're the only one I've ever seen against it.
