Move Nylander

Created by: rgwhite17
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 26, 2022
Published: May 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don’t fully understand people who really hate the idea of moving nylander for the 2nd overall pick. Slafkosvsky is most likely ready to make an impact right away and that’s 6 million that is free to be spent elsewhere.
As a lone move no it doesn’t make the team better but if you can sign someone in free agency and then use other prospects and/or picks at the deadline to add even more the team can be better now and in the long run.

The leafs have their upcoming firsts while Florida and Tampa do not. They can afford to make that big splash for a real top forward to add to this group at the deadline. Especially after drafting second overall.

Doesn’t have to be nicushkin, marchment, Gibson, just shows the money available to add in numerous ways tho.

Slafkovsky is not NHL ready yet. He hasn't been able to make a huge impact in Finland so there's little to suggest he'd do it in NHL right away.

That's not how retention works in a buyout, leafs certainly don't make that trade. I doubt Jersey wants to move their first either.

He is saying trading Mrazek with retention would be preferable to a buyout...

I'm not against trading Nylander, but you would have to get an NHL player back.
You can't rely on an 18 year old to step into a top 6 role like that an replace an 80 point player.

i think they meant that Toronto could offer to retain the same amount as what the buyout would potentially cost

IE, Mrazek buyout penalty would be $1.43M/$833K/$1.13M/$1.13M

If you offer to retain $800K and trade him out, you'd only pay $1.6M over 2 years instead of $4.4M over 4 - less penalty overall and get away from the penalty quicker.

Devils decline. By the time Devils are competing for a cup, Nylander will be UFA and Slafkovsky/Cooley/Nemec will be just arriving.

I don’t want a rookie. I’ll take a second year kid who’s proven himself like Mercer or Jarvis on the Canrs but not a kid who has yet to play an NHL game

How do you get RFA Miles Wood for 750k? He's at minimum filing for arbitration. But if there is logic behind it, pump that right into my veins.

He is probably better off on the 3rd line sure. Ya it has some risk. Kind of have to consider what the extra 6 million is spent on too as the full return.

If 800k were retained the buyout would still be over 4 years. Leafs would just pick up their 21%.

Oh I'm operating under the assumption that the Devils just keep Mrazek for 2 years at $3M, not that they buy him out. I think that's where the disconnect is here

I get that now, but devils most likely buy him out. If I'm dubas I look to move his full contract and buy the cap space. 1.6m over 2 years is worth about a 7th. Hardly worth the effort.
