This makes the leafs worse, they are not trading nylander to make the team worse.

I wouldn't give up 7OA. Nylander will just walk in UFA in 2 years. Plus you're taking 2 years of Mrazek's rotting goalie carcass. You're retaining on Murray and getting a late 1st.

If we're giving up 7OA, I'd like to trade it for someone in the likes of Kirby Dach, move Pinto up to the second line with Stutzle

Interesting, wondering what Leafs fans would think of it

What If I told you guys that Nylander would then extend with Ottawa for 5 years on a similar AAV

That's more projects... Are we ever going to stop rebuilding? Chabot turns 26 y/o in January. Look at the term there will be left on Chabot/Batherson/Tkachuk contracts... something needs to happen, we have to START getting closer to the playoffs, then learn to lose in the playoffs. The road to become true contenders takes time, you have to start by getting out of the basement first.

Leafs love it, idk about the sens. Maybe if nylander was signed for more than 2 years, I think the sens are a team that can easily sign him though

How do the leafs love it? The 7th over all isnt likely to be as good as nylander is ever and brown is a massive massive downgrade.
Not to mention they save nothing worth mentioning on goalies and still have a terrible contract backup who cant stop a beachball.

Leafs have brown back, get a higher pick and in two years we have cap space to resign matthews. Not to mention having Murray. I know he hasn’t been himself with Ottawa but a change of scenery might be what he needs

Your flaw in the trade is that Mrzarek is gonna be on LTIR for the whole season (or even two years). if he was LTIR the Leafs will just keep him.
Oh, I think Leafs love the trade. Murray with retention is better than Mrazrek moving up in the draft is huge. Yea Brown isn't as good Nylander but the Leafs sure could use that 3.4m difference in cap.

Brown is half the player nylander is, the pick upgrade doesn't make up for that difference for a team trying to win the cup. Brown is also a ufa 1 year sooner so the leafs will need to use that cap space to replace him and cap space in 2 years is meaningless right now because the leafs are, again, trying to win now.
The change of scenery to ottawa didnt help murray, how is one to a more high pressure team going to?

I don't think either team likes it. It's not a horrible trade either way value wise. Leafs certainly don't do this while competing. Maybe Ottawa is content to sit out the playoffs while teams like Pittsburgh, Washington Boston continue to regress.

Funny that everyone is complaining about only 2 years then nylander automatically walks and you mention 3 guys that could walk in 2 years or less if they choose to.

Different is RFA vs UFA. And Ehlers has 3 years

It's funny how loud everyone while the player is a leaf then how quiet it gets when that player is moved and they are exposed as fools.

My mistake. For some reason I was certain that ehlers signed 7 years the year before nylander, Which I guess he did but the contract started the same season.

Would be a lot more interested if Nylander was locked up longer. Realistically if the team falters out of the gate this year then you’re getting on solid playoff run with Nylander at the dollar amount.

You want to trade the 7th overall pick for someone you don't even see in the top 6? If you want to bet on potential you keep the pick, if the plan is to move it to launch the team towards playoff contention you need to target impact talent. Kirby Dach is interesting, but with three middling, injury filled season under his belt I think he fails on both counts. I don't put him above Kemmel/Lekkerimaki/Gauthier on upside, and he's obviously not an impact NHL talent. He's 21 so he's obviously still totally capable of getting to that level, but that's a steep buy in price for a risky gamble.

This is why i love the gibson stuff, can you imagine how much other teams wouls be demanding to take him off the leafs hands if he put up those numbers in Toronto for 3 years in a row?

Nearly identical seasons. Both waived and unclaimed.
