Vanecek : a backup you exposed to Seattle in the expansion draft and then got back for a second = an iffy value at best
Iorio : by your own description, a top-4 "prospect" = i.e., a guy unlikely to make the team this season or next
2023 first : by definition, a selection that won't turn into an actual NHL player until 2025-2026, if ever
So we trade five seasons of a starting goalie and have no realistic hope for significant results for at least three of them?
Ah now here is a bias fan, despite an overpay for a guy who hasn't had over .905 SV% in the last 3 years:
A) Ducks are in a rebuild right now. A rebuild is defined as "a team that takes a group of veteran, but (mostly) mediocre players, and trading them for younger, unproven players (or picks), in the hope that the younger players will collectively "grow" into something significant for your organization."
B) Vanecek has better numbers over the past 2 seasons (his only seasons) compared to Gibson over each of the past 3 seasons. So is Gibson an iffy value at best too?
C) In a rebuild, I would love my team to take a top 4 prospect who is a puck moving, 6'4, 19 year-old RHD (puck moving RHDs do not grow on trees). Also, see point A
D) A 1st round pick - see point A
You may have five seasons with a below average (stats wise) goaltender, but you will waste away Gibson's prime while you attempt to rebuild.
