Initial Creation Date: Jul. 18, 2022

Description
Fun blow-up hypothetical, think WPG has been stuck in the mud for too long here, gotta try gain some traction towards real progress.

Trades
1.
WPG
  1. Byron, Paul
  2. Dvorak, Christian
  3. Guhle, Kaiden
Additional Details:
Tough to deal an RFA like this, but grabbing a vet like Byron helps locker room and Dvorak is a solid middle 6 center. Guhle has a chance to be a top pairing guy, so I can understand hesitancy from MTL, but you've gotta give a little to get a little.
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
He may not deserve it, but doing right by PLD doesn't hurt, let MTL expedite their window. There'd have to be an extension in place before the trade is complete.
2.
WPG
  1. Beauvillier, Anthony
Additional Details:
Take a low-risk shot at Tito finding his form, think he fits well with the long-term outlook of the team.
NYI
  1. Dillon, Brenden
  2. Vesalainen, Kristian [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
NYI gets even bigger and even meaner on the backend, hopefully a change of scenery will serve Vesalainen well.
3.
WPG
  1. Askarov, Yaroslav
  2. Johansen, Ryan
Additional Details:
Johansen isn't a super steep dropoff from Scheif's production, contract is a lot but getting a goalie of the future feels worth 8x3.
NSH
  1. Scheifele, Mark
  2. 2025 2nd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
NSH gets some offensive pop while clearing cap, makes them better soon as he hits the ice.
4.
WPG
  1. Blackwood, Mackenzie
  2. Foote, Nolan
  3. Sharangovich, Yegor
Additional Details:
Get younger and fully commit to a rebuild, give Hellebuyck a chance to compete in his prime.
NJD
  1. Hellebuyck, Connor
Additional Details:
NJD has the money to spend, Hellebuyck's contract isn't too much for them to re-sign Bratt. Losing depth scoring hurts but they had a chance to be a playoff time last year if they got even average goaltending.

You don't get traction or go forward by trading good players for bad players.

The more confident NJD fan in me does this trade. But would rather send a pick than Sharangovich.

You gain traction by committing to either competing or rebuilding, nothing worse than just being in the middle of the league for as long as the Jets have been and will be unless they change their ways.

I think Yegor will command some good $ next season, so that's why I added him in over a pick/prospect. Also, the team is too good to keep trotting out unserious goaltending.

Byron + Dvorak + Harris + the later of Montreal's 2 1st round picks, if both are top 10 it becomes a 2024 unprotected 1st.

That is an easy no for the Isles. The D is set for next year and trading Beau would have to return a forward.

As of right now the Isles only need is a proven top 6 scorer.

I don't hate it, I just want to cheer for Guhle on a team I can stomach lol.

You could probably get more for Hellebuyck right now considering the Goalie market.

Sonny Milano still on the market, think he matches or does more than Beau, trade gives them some cap wiggle room. Understand your explanation but Lou loves him some big Dmen like Dillon, so maybe I'll keep my fingers crossed.

For some reason I think Barron will be the target. Right hand D. Not sure what the rest of the deal will look like.

I was tempted to throw one of Holtz/Stillman in the trade but decided against just based on Helle's age and contract atm. As good as he is, the contract he's due for gives me pause -- so many 30+ goalies in the league on bad contracts right now, can see him becoming one of them down the line.

Milano is best suited as a 3rd line guy IMO. Beau is currently the only guy besides Barzal in the top 6 that has speed. The Isles cannot afford to get even slower at forward.

Winnipeg needs firsts in any deals, squad lives and dies on team control and drafting above average.

Respectfully, has it worked in NYI for him though? I agree the Isles need him, but his name has been in rumours for what feels like 2-3 years now. Think a change of scenery may be on its way.

Yeah, but he's also only got 2 years left at a reasonable cap hit

I opted for "older" prospects for the sake of keeping Connor-Ehlers happy. Don't want them wasting their prime years on a basement team waiting on a future 1st to make the leap to the show.

Lou also loves gritty two way forwards who perform in the playoffs (like Beau) . Can you explain how Milano matches more than Beau?

Isles are set at D, I’ve never heard of a team trading a top 6 forward to fill the 7th defenseman role

Yeah his current contract is no reason for pause -- I'd say it's one of the best in the NHL. My worry is the contract after this one. Think of Bobrovsky, Price, etc. With the workload WPG has given him over the years I wouldn't be surprised to see him follow the same path as the guys mentioned.

STORY OF MY LIFE!!

I am more willing to pay the price for a top-10 goalie than for a winger.

I think I sent these in another thread a while back:

1. A 2023 1st round pick (top-5 protected, rolls to unprotected 2024 1st)
2. Blackwood
3. Your choice of Daws, Schmid, (or I guess Brennan)
4. Your choice of Walsh, Boqvist, Thompson, Zetterlund, McCarthy (or similar level prospect)

or

1. 2023 or 2024 2nd round pick
2. Blackwood
3. Your choice of Daws, Schmid, (or I guess Brennan)
4. Your choice of Foote, Holtz, Gritsyuk

He is included in most "rumors" because everyone else (Lee, Nelson, Palmeri) all have NTC, and no one wants Bailey at his cap hit. So bloggers/ writers speculate that he would be the guy to go. I do not expect him to ever be more than a 20/20 guy at most, but he does help create offense with his speed and forecheck and would hate to trade Barzal's best friend on the team before you have to re-sign him long term.

LOL the issue is outside of Guhle we have no D man that projects to be a top pairing guy.

Not sure there is a keep Connor and ehlers happy scenario, quite possibly the jets two best jets and two best contracts, might be a sell high scenario, going to be rough on fan base and organization. But could be In the cards next off season, a lot riding on this season. Would be nice to find 3 more firsts along with there own and have 5 firsts to go with last 3 firsts going forward.
