Description
I don't think they contend for the Cup, but I think the compete for the 'yoffs for sure with all the previous playoff Atlantic teams declining this offseason. Depending on a variety of things, of course...

An alternate take on this was that instead of the PK Slewban reunion, MTL trades for Dumba from MIN, since it might be unlikely they'll be able to re-sign him (plus, they've been rumored to have been shopping him for a while?). I went with the safer bet, since that's probably a bit too many variables to figure out. It probably would've included sending Dadonov or another winger to MIN in the trade with Allen.

Paul Byron has a pretty good buyout price, so he can be bought out if necessary. I didn't do it in this case since the cap works with him there

They should have enough money to #ExtendGoalfield next offseason with Dadonov and Byron coming off the books

The FLA Live Arena 1st can be that pick, or a prospect. This is likely to get WPG to do it before the season starts

  1. Merrill, Jon
Additional Details:
I feel like MIN could use a reliable backup goaltender for this year, and they have one too many NHL defensemen. Good for MTL, who desperately needs them...!

Personally, I’m ok with Dvorak and the 1st as a start, but if Montreal needs to move cap to make it work (Drouin, Hoffman, Byron etc) then more needs to come back.

That's fair. I thought they'd be doing WPG a favor since their top 9 has taken a pretty big dent lately (I'm a Rangers fan but they've currently got Morgan ****in' Barron on their 3rd line... c'mon haha...), but I'm sure MTL wouldn't be opposed to even a little more, if necessary

I think WPG would likely be happier with Dadonov than Drouin, and the chance to put Drouin and Dubois together -- two boys from Ste-Agathe — might be too much for the Habs brass to resist.

That return is what a pending UFA at TDL gets, not a guy with two years left

Why do we need a backup? We have two goalies under contract and Gustavsson is not waiver exempt

Gustavsson is not really NHL proven and Flower isn't getting any younger. Honestly there have been a lot of 3rd goalie signings that aren't waiver exempt this offseason, so I'm not sure it'll matter too much.

I'm not sure what you're talking about...? PLD currently doesn't have a contract?

he still has two years of control left. There is no fight of signing him right now, its all based on a 1 year contract vs 8. PLD would be stupid to want to go to MTL right now

Yeah, there certainly are a lot of options with the endless wingers MTL has haha... that's certainly an option. Not sure if Dadonov's clause would still get in the way of that, though

Until he pulls a Nylander and sits at home... bahaha

WPG doesn't seem built to rebuild right now, so they should probably get this sorted before the year starts

Jake Allen will be a primary asset a the trade deadline, they won’t trade him for a marginal defenseman.

I disagree. He would be playing for a coach who was his hero growing up. He emulates Vincent Lecavalier, who is also in the Habs front office. He would be a Quebecker coming home to help rebuild the team that he and all his friends and family grew up watching. I suspect getting in on the ground floor is a rebuild like the Avs just did over the past 6 years would be pretty exciting.

Minnesota traded Talbot to have cap. Minnesota isn't taking on Jake Allen and his contract..he was in central division before. By the way, jon merrill was given 3 years extension and is currently injured. So either way, trade isn't happening. Same way with you trying to send dadnov to Minnesota

That does more damage to him than Winnipeg.

So he goes from a playoff team to a basement dweller just cuz he can. This would show what a great mindset he would have.

If I was him, I would re-up in Winnipeg and show the world what he can do for a massive payday in 2 years

Didn't Drouin and Ehlers play junior together? I think Drouin would be a good addition for the Jets.

Even if he does sign and play for two years and then walks in free agency, you really think having him play there for 2 years when he doesn't want to be there will be better than getting a fairly good return here for an unsigned player? No matter what you are gonna lose, may as well get some middle 6 players (where PLD was playing anyway) and futures and try to compete now

Everyone on here was making Dvorak trades and blowing him before he went to MTL... all a sudden he's chopped liver. This place is weird sometimes haha...

Exactly, if the Wild didn’t feel good having Gus as their backup goalie they wouldn’t have traded Talbot for him, they would have moved Talbot for picks/skaters and acquired a goalie another way otherwise they essentially just gave Talbot away for free.

They did for a year, but Drouin is no good to anyone until he can prove that two years of relative inactivity are behind him and that he's ready to be in the prime of his career.

I'd take the risk from a Jets perspective, think he'd do well in Jets top 6.

Not sure what makes you think the Jets are a playoff team. They haven't replaced Stastny. Dubois is one of several players who were critical of management. I think Rick Bowness is a great guy, but he's not a miracle worker. They are closer to staying 6th in the Central than they are being in the top 3.

Good trade for MTL. But if I'm Jets GM I'd ask for Dadonov instead of taking a chance on Drouin's health.

But we can't trade Jake. What if Price can't play? There are no decent goalies available except maybe Holtby and he may not be around long.
