Moving Sandin and Kerfoot without ripping off the other team

Created by: SudburyWolves
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 25, 2022
Published: Jul. 25, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This site is full of people who want to make this delusional trades that are so one sided. Many of Leaf nation are among the worst offenders.

Sandin needs to be traded for an ELC forward. That doesn’t mean Sandin for Shane Wright or something stupid like that. Also Kerfoot needs to return two players, but they aren’t going to be studs and it won’t save much cap.

Nobodies? You mean since they play for AZ and you haven’t seen them play that makes them nobodies? Each has played in the league already and they’re 22 and 23 year old forwards on cheap contracts

What, you’ve watched them play? Who cares if they played in the league? Point is draft picks preferred unless you know the prospects coming back are valuable, which no one here does.

I have watched them both. Smith is a better prospect than Abruzzese but the average Leafs fan here probably doesn’t realize that. Smith was a key component of MN State’s Frozen Four run. Maccelli lit it up in the AHL and looked reasonably comfortable playing a bottom 6 role last year in the NHL. How do you expect to pay Sandin?

OK, I guess we take your word for it? And that you know how to assess prospects? No offense, but I have my doubts on both so I still prefers draft picks. Leafs like a lot of teams have to move out salary (if they want to sign sandin) - how /when they do it, not sure. That’s why dubas gets paid the big $

Minnesota declines easily. We don't want Kerfoot leafs fans. Gm and coaches see duhaime, an elc player as next Marcus foligno

The value of that trade is fair enough for both teams. I’m not saying you should take the deal just it’s a much better deal than “kerfoot to Anaheim for their 2nd”

Minnesota declines still. We have no need for Kerfoot and aren't moving duhaime. Nor taking on more expensive bottom line player in Kerfoot who would be 4th line player in Minnesota. It's okay to be sending Kerfoot elsewhere, same with holl

4th line? Ok I’m not a Kerfoot is the greatest player kind of guy like many here but 4th line? I am not sure he’s on the 4th line of anyone

He's on Minnesota. Minnesota is stacked with plenty players like Kerfoot. It not too hard for leafs fans to understand. We have no need for him. We don't want him. Leafs fans Keep proposing Kerfoot or holl to Minnesota and gets mad when told no. Minnesota would be the last team wanting Kerfoot

I am saying Smith has shown to be a better prospect thus far than Abruzzese. That’s backed up by pure fact of the trajectory of their play. It doesn’t mean it will be that way forever. Maccelli did tear it up in the AHL. His stats prove that. I only saw his games in the NHL and naturally the scoring is going to be much lower given the change in role from a top 6 AHLer to a bottom six NHLer.

We could work a trade where one pick and one ELC come back our way but I don’t see a team just tossing away their 1st to us for Sandin

One's ignorance of a thing does not actually signify anything about the thing or about the people who do.

I’ve never proposed a single trade to MN until this one. Leafs fans on here propose Kerfoot to every team. Pretty much everyone says they don’t need him. I get that too, he’s nothing special. Neither is Tyson Jost, which is why I had him come back in that deal

Hmm. Macelli has probably reached B+/A- status as a prospect, maybe could be a decent 2nd liner if all goes well. Smith... mmmm not so much. He could be a big late bloomer, but for now all indications seem to point to a depth player. It's not as bad as some may make it out to be, but I still think Sandin is the clear best piece in the deal.

Duhaime was the only rookie who made team, played every game including top 4 role and is seen as next Marcus foligno and barely being paid 100, 0000. Tyson jost is like 2 mil, or a little more. Sorry but not happening. We will keep jost who will rotate between 2nd and 4th line and same with duhaime. You can trade Kerfoot elsewhere

It’s essentially a 2nd and a 3rd for Sandin. We wouldn’t get a first back for him

Kerfoot to Anaheim for a 2nd is not a bad deal in itself in terms of value. It's a bad deal because of the teams needs+wants/Kerfoot's contract situation.

The Sandin trade is perhaps making the best of a bad situation, not getting even value for him, but in the Leafs case they are probably best off just taking a 2nd rounder (I'm sure they can get more) and drafting someone they like or letting him sit until he signs.

They would be better off getting those as picks from a team that could use him, unless they don't have prospects in their own pool better than or as NHL ready as those guys you mentioned.

We can’t sign him without moving someone because of how bad our cap situation is

Thank you pompadour; in words you may understand “ one saying one knows something with no proof (or reasonable method to provide such proof) does not equate to knowledge. Could be, but also could not be”. Find it hard to believe anyone on this site has detailed knowledge of random, little known prospects - especially from Arizona who I forget sometimes has an nhl team.

Saying Smith is worth a 3rd is quite the stretch.

The cap situation isn't bad at all. They can move Kerfoot, his contract is very movable, it's just a matter of time. If he doesn't sign until later in the season or next season that's something that would be addressed then. At current state, they just need to trade Kampf (which would be a loss but he's not irreplaceable) or Holl.

They would have 22 players on the main roster and they have AHL players who will be competing for spots as well, so they are covered for injuries. If you look at the other teams who are over the cap, the Leafs are among those who are in a good position to be cap compliant with few moves.
