Additional Details:
I’m told the sens remain in pursuit of Jacob Chychrun. There have been talks this week. The ask remains two 1st round picks and a high end prospect plus Arizona would also take Zaitsev.

Costing a 1st to dump is more of a reflection on the current trade market and his term rather than him being super bad imo

OTT does not have to dump Zeitzev, they are not in a cap crunch and can just burry him in bellville so teams do not have leverage on OTT to ask for more

The second and third were two and three years away. That does affect value. But yeah it was a hefty price. I feel like Zaitsev is better than Kassian though.

Thats true but Zaitsev's cap hit is also 80% higher than Nemeth's

Another thing to consider now is that ARZ is already at the cap floor. They dont need to add salary now while they did earlier in the offseason since they were forced to spend that money anyway

Can they add Chychrun and keep Zaitsev?

Is Zaitsev that bad?

Bad decision making . Sends the puck away and often gets caught flat footed. Not good for possession hockey at all

It depends on what DeBrincat/Stutzle want in their extensions next year.

This is pretty much right

From Arizona side, probably want a prospective nucleus guy with team control that’s takes him beyond the prospective 5 years in the college barn, and 1sts going forward to push the control into the prospective new barn. If I’m Armstrong I start there too, possibly hold to the firsts or maybe a extra second, and change the nucleus add, and possibly a lesser chance he makes it too new barn. Put interesting times ahead, got to pumped for the season sens fans

Cat has a 9M QO next year so that is what he will get unless he takes less on a long term deal, Stu, pinto and sanderson are getting bridge deals

If they can then I dont see why Zaitsev would be part of this discussion anyway. Remove him and lower the price for Ottawa

The deal won’t be done without Zaitsev. Ottawa can’t make the money work.

They have nearly 8 million in cap space now. Unless they're planning to pay >3 million for Formenton I think the money works fine. And they probably shouldn't commit that much to Formenton yet even without the Hockey Canada thing hanging over his head. The bigger issue seems to be roster related, they already have three RHDs making decent money and a bunch of guys already fighting for the last two defenseman spots.

Really this just doesn't make a ton of sense for Ottawa. Presumably they envision Chychrun as either a Chabot partner or a Sanderson partner, both of whom are LHDs. Paying a ton to get Chychrun only to have to play him on his his offhand and who has a decent ceiling on his effectiveness beyond goal scoring is a weird move. They'd be better off making a cheaper bet on a guy who actually plays the right side like Lundkvist or anyone in the Kings' system since apparently all they draft is RHDs. I support teams making big swings and Ottawa does need to improve their defense but idk this is a weird pairing for me.

he would cost more next year to move tho as OTT would need the space his cap hit takes

You cant have it both ways. ARZ doesnt care if its a want or need for OTT. If they want to move him now then its going to cost them and if they wait until next year when they need to move him its also going to cost them

But I think having 1 less year of term would decrease the cost to dump more than the necessity of moving him, especially with a salary cap increase coming

I don't understand why they don't just call LA and get them to work out a deal for one of their many RHD? Probably just cost them one decent prospect or pick and then they don't have to over pay to k last a got on his wrong side

Because apparently their ask is for Brandt Clarke, to which Blake hangs up the phone immediately.

I don’t understand why GMs these days are making their ask price known as they always seem to come up short. It used to be that they wanted “difference-makers” or something generic. Now, it’s “two 1sts, a prospect”.

As for Chychrun, I don’t think he would be worth that much unless you are willing to pay extra for the low cap hit for three years. If you are Tampa or Colorado, you can take that approach. But Ottawa isn’t there yet.

Kassian also makes the team worse and so does Nemeth. How do you know he couldve moved Zaitsev for a 2nd? Either way the market has already been set for cap dump value to Arizona now

Kassian at 3.2Mx2 cost a 2nd + 3rd + difference between picks 29 and 32
Nemeth at 2.5Mx2 cost a 2nd + 3rd which is upgradable to a 2nd minus the value of a recent 3rd round pick

Zaitsev has the same term as them but his cap hit is 1.3M more than Kassian and 2M more than Nemeth. Both of them cost more than a 2nd to dump, so I dont see how Zaitsev would cost less when he has a significantly larger cap hit

In the Nemeth trade, the Rangers did get back Ty Emberson in that deal. He is a decent defensive RHD prospect that was K’Andre Miller’s defensive partner at Wisconsin. In Miller’s bad year, there was some discussion about who the better player was defensively.

I’m not sure if he’s the right fit for Ottawa other than being local. They’re more in need of a Faber type

Yea I said minus the value of a recent 3rd round pick. Now that I look more into it 2018 wasnt that recent but I still think hes around a 3rd in value anyway

A Sanderson / Faber pairing would be ideal as new age, defend-with-your-skating type pairing.

Ian Moore, Ryan Johnson, Guillaume Richard….others that can skate, close gaps.
