Honestly I think the only thing that really makes this a murky trade for me is that Toronto already got rid of Kapanen once, and he's been arguably worse in Pittsburgh. So, if you're Toronto: why are you bringing him back? What does he do that they haven't compensated for? Kerfoot plays center which makes him way more valuable and I think he's a serviceable player (Toronto fans can correct me if not but rn they want everyone's heads on pikes). I could see the Anderson-Archibald thing though tbh.

Is there a CBA that say Kapanen must be traded every couple of years between Toronto and Pittsburgh because i don't see why Toronto would want Kapanen back

Leafs need Kerfoot and his potential at centre when needed more than Kapanen.

Generally speaking, I don't think Toronto would be opposed to bringing him back but it probably would have to be on a cheaper deal. They wouldn't be giving up Kerfoot for him for sure.

Kapanen and Johnsson were both cap casualties and were replaced by Mikheyev and Engvall, if they were to come back they would definetly need to be on cheaper deals. I don't think the Leafs trade Joey Anderson though, he's doing very well in the AHL this season and could be a super cheap replacement for Engvall.

Just because it says C under his name doesn't mean he can play C. he's played wing almost exclusively in his time in Toronto, and Colorado before that

So, Alexander Kerfoot is listed as a center on NHL.com, Hockeyreference, here. And he almost certainly does play center, which is what I said. That he has the ability and experience to. Not that he is ALWAYS playing center for Toronto. So, I don't know what your issue is with me stating that he CAN play center which DOES increase his value to NHL GMs, whether you like it or not. The leafs need to shed at least one contract spot to be able to sign a non-injured goalie in case one of Kallgren or Samsonov gets hurt. There’s literally nobody healthy behind them signed to play in the NHL. Even Kallgren was run over like the day before he got called up.

I think between McMann, Steeves(ish) and especially Holmberg they’ve got a 4C in there somewhere, HOPEFULLY a 3C. And there’s Gaudette as the backup backup backup option.

Wouldn’t mind Kerfoot + Anderson for Kapanen. I think it fills a need for speed on the leaf’s shutdown line, and for the pens a desire for a rental 3C + to push over Carter to the wing.

No, trading for a bottom-6 depth guy like Archibald would be a desperation move that would be done with excessive injury for a team that is likely still making the playoffs. This happens a lot, when we go "wait, they traded for that guy?" Everyone else here understood that I meant about trading for Archibald, a player they do not currently need but if they were DESPERATE for NHL forward depth, they could make a trade. Also, just since you mentioned "an AHL player", you may want to look at the kind of players that were in the AHL for years before their solid NHL careers: Tim Thomas, Ryan Miller, Mark Giordano, Duncan Keith, Marc Methot, Derick Brassard, Tomas Plekanec.
