Who needs to add what to make this fair or can it be

Created by: SGB88
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 23, 2022
Published: Nov. 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Who's winning this trade and what would one side need to add to make it happen? I don't think it's that far off, but maybe I'm wrong?
Trades
VAN
  1. Holl, Justin
  2. Kerfoot, Alexander
Additional Details:
Canucks need a 3rd line center and Kerfoot could be good long term fit as a local. This also clears space for next offseason, although they could just wait and trade Myers in the off season.
TOR
  1. Myers, Tyler ($500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Myers is a solid right D who's size will really help in the playoff and will do well if he can play further down the line up, but he is overpaid. Toronto won't want him on the books next year, but they should be able to flip him in the off season for an actual return once they pay his $5million bonus.

No team is going to take Myers at 5.5 cap hit either. That's the problem with the rumor. Teams will want a healthy retention on that 6 mil but Myers doesn't warrant the cost, so the Canucks would have to accept it as the cost of doing business ... which they won't. Saying he'd be useful in the playoffs is a bit misleading too. Sure, he's tall but he doesn't play a physical game at all. In his 13 year career, he's only eclipsed the 100 hit mark 3 times.

I think Arizona, Buffalo and other league minimum spenders 100% will. They will only need to pay Myres $1,000,000. It gets them to the cap floor and they can flip him with salary retention and the deadline for an easy 2nd round pick.

They would demand assets for you dumping your 6 mil in bad cap.

It's not $6 million in bad cap. With retention above it's $5.5m and he probably would get ~$4.5m as a free agent for a 1 year contract so it's about $1million of bad cap for half season which you can flip for about 2nd round pick and it costs the basically nothing. You can say that teams won't do it, but your wrong and there'd be a bidding war.

Probably a good thing I never used the term dead cap then.

The funnies part of your statement is how off base you are for your own Schtick. Myers is big but not at all physical, he doesn't intimidate anyone because he's soft. He's a taller Engvall but also useless and makes 6 million.

No they can, he's not worth 3 million. He's a 3rd pair defender, someone may take him to get to the cap floor but they are going to want assets and then hope they can flip him but probably won't.

Only from Benning. He's not a good player and hasn't been all that good since his rookie season.

A player who isn't worth his cap is dead cap. Myers shouldn't be making 3 million let alone 6. That's 3 million of dead cap

Myers isn't a good defenceman and makes almost double what Kerfoot makes.

The answer to the question of who adds, it is Dubas.....adding the Canucks front office to his blocked list.

Myers problem is consistency. Somedays he's a good defenseman, most days he's average and on those days, he's overpaid. Kerfoot is decent on the wing but can't win enough faceoffs to be a good center.

Myers is bad defensively and isn't good offensively. He's huge but not physical, long reach but doesn't know what to do with it. He's below average almost all the time. He's not worth 3 million. And I would take Holl over him unless Myers made less money which he doesn't. You aren't getting anything for him and the Leafs won't take him for free, you'd have to retain half and add a sweetener.

He could get 4.5m but so could Holl and Kerfoot could, so it makes no sense for the Leafs to trade 2 players for 1 that costs the same and isn't really going to be better than either. A more reasonable price for Holl and Myers is 3-3.5m in FA and for Kerfoot 3.5-4 at the current pace that he is at. Both Holl and Myers could even potentially be had for 2.5-3m with decent term if they are going to a team that they view as a true contender in free agency. Kerfoot is going to remain 3m+ in all situations.

The only way the Leafs are taking Myers is if they are being paid to take him, and it's going to require retention just like Murray. The best scenario for Vancouver would be Myers at 4.5m+a 3rd. If Holl expects more than 3m to resign, and they don't see cheaper options than Myers at 3m, then I could see Kerfoot for Myers at 3-3.5m + a pick.

I didn't say we were getting anything for Myers, I just pointed out to the OP that Kerfoot is a bad choice for a 3C.
