Colorado should 100% be all over Horvat. Newhook should be a part of the package and they go for BTB championships

As MacKinnon/Horvat being the one two punch screams SCF

I think if they were to give Newhook in a trade for Horvat, they would want to extend him.

But they couldn't sign Kadri last summer because they didn't have cap space, and it's gonna be worse next year.

I think they go for a cheaper 2C rental, keep Newhook and hope he's ready for 2C next year.

If the cap goes up 4mill (86.5mill) Colorado can do it. Heck if Colorado trades out Girard which may eventually happen they could also make it work

Also, Girard's buyout is very lenient, only 833k towards the cap.
If Colorado could stomach parting with a guy like Newhook in a Horvat trade with the intention of extending Horvat, that could be a reasonable course of action, especially if Girard's cap proves unmovable in the summer.

But when Wright and Donskoi return then what. They got to many forwards rn lul

Wright’s probably not getting NHL ice time when he comes back from the WJC so that’s that, with the rest, they’ll just waive the worst performing player, maybe trade a forward for help elsewhere/futures

I'm sure MTL would be interested in Girard, whether it's paying for him, or just taking his contract for FC. It'll depend on his market value i guess.

friendly reminder that faceoffs (and having a high, or low, FO%) truly doesn't matter

I did read somewhere the plan is to have his team in the OHL trade him to a contender after WCJ.

He played a lot on the right side. And they need a PP specialist on defense.

Don't tell Avs fans that. They will come at you with pitchforks if you propose they acquire a rental

What would it take the Avs to pay for Nelson. Newhook is a must to fill the 2c role but that would free up cap. And if they get rid of Bailey they could make a move for horvat

I did the math. If Horvat decides **** it I want to win and signs a Coutourier like extension then Colorado can keep him and still have a good bottom 6. Yes it also means a Girard trade but if all goes well with that they can be the next team to potentially threaten a 3peat

As lets be real rn Avs need a 2c. And Horvat would basically be Kadri 2.0 without the temper and better defensively

Yes he takes less than he would in open market or Van but in an environment like the one AVS provide u do it

Avs will not sign a late 20s player on a shooting bender long term.

I do believe they’d include newhook in a trade, I’m starting to doubt he’ll be a top 6 player anyways.

Flames look really bad in period-1, PP + PK were flacid and "squeezing-the-stick" has a taken on a new meaning...

Well considering they did try to extend Kadri but Calgary gave a few more years and a bit more money for a younger guy in Horvat I believe they would be alright with the money and term. As lets be real if Horvat agreed to a 7.75mill x 7-8 year deal go for it especially with the cap increase. Horvat is 28 in April. Lets say he signs an 8 year deal by the end he is 36 at the end thats not bad at all as if we look at his playstyle he should age fine

To sum it up if all goes well

2023-2024 cap could go as high as 4.5mill per Bettman.

So at the low point we could see 83.5 but high point 87mill

All depends on debt being paid off but so far its looking good

I’m pretty sure they offered Kadri 6 mill x 3 . That’s a lot different than signing Horvat to a 8 mill x 8 . Horvat isn’t a 1st line caliber center, he’s just having a career season.

I think it’s more likely they trade for Jonathan Toews and sign him to a 5 mill x 2 contract

Toews to me is going home to WPG. Imagine Scheifele, PLD, Toews

They got the space and assets to make it happen to

As for Horvat I think Avs go you know what this is a guy to build around with MacKinnon as 28yrs for a 2c aint bad vs 32 for Kadri (at the time)

It’s just not how the Avs operate. They know Horvat is going to regress next season. They might trade for him, no shot they extend him. Colorado usually trade + sign players who show signs of breaking out from a production standpoint (Lehkonen, Toews etc) ,

I agree, doubt Lou trades him though. Isles need to make room for Raty but they’ll probably just have Pageau move to wing
