  1. Holtz, Alexander
  2. 2023 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
What else is needed? Feel like this is good enough value- two first rounders, no protection on the first in a deep draft. Will probably get dragged, not familiar with the Sharks situation

Does he come with an extension? If not i would say this is 2 much for Meier, maybe im crazy but Debrincat got a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd...no contract was in place. the 1st was 7th overall so that helps i guess. Still think Holtz is worth quite a bit.

Sharks should take a bad contract back potentially. That's it.

Sharks don't NEED to trade Timo so the return will be more than what NJ fans will say is fair. Adding a Good D-prospect like Mukhamadullin or Casey would likely be what would push GMMG to say yes.

You're out of your mind if you think anyone of significant value is coming back with Holtz and a 1st

Holtz hasn't shown he's been able to keep up to the NHL level yet, and NJ fans act like he's going to be a superstar without doubt. The first rounder is going to be in the 25 overall range which is rarely a top six/top pairing player, let alone a guaranteed NHLer. Timo IS ALREADY an all-star caliber first line power forward. No GM is just hoping that Holtz and a late round pick will amount to Timo's value. They'd be better off signing Timo long term, since the Sharks should be coming out of their rebuild as Timo is 2-3 years into his contract.

Timo is not being shopped, Grier is listening. Meaning he's not going anywhere unless the value is there.

7OA, 39OA, 24' 3rd
which is worth more than Holtz + a _late_ projected 23' 1st, but it should be because Debrincat is better than Meier, so I think this value is appropriate. I'd want SJ to pull the trigger because they're going to continue to be horrible and they might as well do a real rebuild.

In general NJD fans highly value Holtz meanwhile he can't get into their roster while also undervaluing Meier... it's just a lost cause and it's more likely Meier will resign with SJ unless he makes it clear he wants out. Can't imagine Grier not wanting a player like Meier long term

need? no, he hasnt demanded a trade and they could make the money work. That doesnt mean it wouldnt behoove Grier and the sharks. If they are serious about a rebuild, they SHOULD trade a 26 year old FWD while his value is at his highest. In 5 years he will be 31 with a year or two left on the deal, the sharks might be good again, and somebody much younger will be needing that 8+ million in cap space.

Yes and in 4 years the sharks will have 7 mil coming off the books from Vlasic, 8 mil from Cooch, and 11.5 from Karlsson. That's 26.5 mil to allocate to our younger guys getting big deals, not even accounting for salary cap increases. Meier at, say 9 mil a year, won't be taking away salary from anyone, he'll be a key contributor still. 31 is not old, and an 8 year deal expires when he's 34, typically when players start regressing so the timing of an 8 year deal is perfect for the Sharks and their timeline

All of this is either untrue or unlikely.

The data suggest forwards are at their peak around the age of 23 or 24 and begin to regress in their mid twenties.
553 forwards have played nhl games this year.
47 of them are 31 or older
16 of them play 15 minutes or more per game
11 of them are producing at 0.5 points per game or higher

Can you link the data you're referencing? The majority or players do not break into the league until 22-23. I haven't seen anything that shows the 23-34 is the most productive age.
There are also 83 forwards that are 31 or older. So you're essentially cutting the actual number in half.

By your logic, why would anyone sign a player past 31 ever? They're apparently an old bag of bones at that point. And I didn't say he'll be playing his best hockey at that point, I'm saying he'll still be a key contributor.
