Smart Team Adds

Created by: Skyraider112
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 29, 2022
Published: Dec. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Looking to add either a good young defenseman or a solid vet on the blueline. Also would be smart to add an experienced forward, preferably either a physical winger or a faceoff adept center (or both!). Ideally looking for pending UFAs to be had at a bargain price or a high-quality player with term to be had for a fair price. Willing to part with our B range prospects and some of our 2nds in 2023.
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Sturm, Nico
Additional Details:
Player with 22 games of playoff experience. A 57.9% faceoff percentage this season (53.7% career). Can kill penalties too. Has some term at a reasonable AAV for a 3rd/4th line player.
SJS
  1. Johnson, Ryan [Reserve List]
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Low chance of Johnson signing in Buffalo which is a bummer, he's such a great skater and will be a very solid 2nd or 3rd pairing defenseman. I would highly guess he'd sign in SJS as it is very close to home for him and they do not have a logjam on the blueline. If he doesn't however, they get a 2nd round pick in compensation
2.
BUF
  1. Jeannot, Tanner
Additional Details:
Jeannot has struggled offensively this season, not sure that Nashville would move him. Nevertheless, he fills a need we have on the Sabres for a physical winger
NSH
  1. Asplund, Rasmus
  2. Cederqvist, Filip
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Asplund and Jeannot are the same age, Asplund has developed into a dependable and speedy bottom 6 producer who is great on the defensive side of the game. Cederqvist is a prospect with good potential due to his size and shot combination
3.
BUF
  1. Murphy, Connor
Additional Details:
Murphy on a good value contract for 3 additional seasons. Chicago would move him for the right price imo. Murphy would accept the trade, its closer to home and he would be playing with a much better team and be paired with up-and-coming OP
CHI
  1. Hinostroza, Vinnie ($850,000 retained)
  2. Portillo, Erik [Reserve List]
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Chicago receives a solid college goalie prospect who would likely sign as Chicago has a need in goal and Portillo could be ready for NHL duties next season.

Hinostroza is a familiar face, Chicago could flip him at the TDL or they could resign him if they so choose. Hino is 50% retained so that he is easily flippable, and if Chicago retains 50% when they move him he only counts for 425k towards the cap. Philly 2nd is likely near the beginning of the 2nd round
4.
BUF
  1. Mackey, Connor
Additional Details:
Good skating LHD with size, upgrade over Bryson.
CGY
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey
Additional Details:
Mitts can be a top 9 forward for Calgary, Sutter won't like the way he currently plays but maybe he can turn him into a better player. Calgary has the cap space for this move although I'd be willing to retain on Mitts if a pick came back to Buffalo

You're right when you say Nashville might not move Jeannot. I'd doubt they'd be interested in that trade

Swap portillo with a forward prospect. Hawks have soderblom who's played really well and they just drafted Commesso to be their future starter.

Nice. I like all the moves. The only one that I'm not sure about is Murphy, but if that's the cost, of course try it.

I actually think Johnson signs, off course things could change if Adams makes a couple D moves. But not bad.

Calgary's in a cap crunch next year. You can keep Mittelstadt and then just claim Mackey when he's eventually placed on waivers

I don’t see San Jose doing that unless Johnson is for sure signing with San Jose. Like, already agreed to terms then sure. Otherwise it’s Sturm for a third which is a steal with how he has played this year

I think JOhnson is from northern California, not sure if that influences his decision, but he may be more apt to sign there. I hope he stays in Buffalo tbh, I think where sabres are now he would fit perfectly on the 3rd pair.

That is good value imo for a player who had one good season and now one poor season. Asplund is a good bottom 6 forward, Cederqvist has good upside, that 2nd I could make Buffalo's to make it more valuable if need be.

Fair but Portillo could be very helpful for the intern before Commesso would even be playing in the NHL, never hurts to have multiple options in goal. I could swap Portillo with someone like Kisakov or Poltapov.

Thanks man. Murphy imo is a really steady 2nd pair guy. I like that his contract is reasonable and has term. He would be the sort of partner I'd want for Power moving forward.

I would love Johnson to sign, but I don't think anything has changed since he decided to stay in college. What makes you think he would sign?

Over whom? I love Zemgus, so maybe acquiring Sturm is redundant. But Jokiharju is fine as a depth option imo, he and or Lyubushkin can swap turns sitting.

Well they could easily move an RFA player on a 2.5 mil contract with one year remaining next season if that's the case. Imo it helps Calgary this season, by next season they can adjust accordingly.

Nope if Johnson doesn't sign with the NHL club who owns his rights that team gets a compensatory 2nd in 2023. So San Jose either gets a 2nd and 3rd or a really solid D-prospect and a 3rd. Both are probably overpays for a bottom 6 forward, but Sturm has the experience, term, and play style that fits Buffalo's needs.

Agreed. I love Johnson's game, retaining him on the Sabres would make an unreal left-side of Sam, Power, Johnson. That would be tops in the league no doubt

I doubt Nashville would have any interest not because of value, but because of Jeannot. Hynes and Poile all love him, so it’d take a huge overpay for us to move him. Saplings is not someone the Preds would have interest in either. He’s too small and doesn’t match the play style of the rest of Nashville’s bottom six.

Jeannot has fallen victim to the extraordinarily bad offensive system that Hynes has put in place, but in recent weeks, he seems to have found a home on a line wi to Glass and Nino. Jeannot can’t buy a goal to save his life, but he is creating quality chances. It is only a matter of time til Jeannot picks up the pace.
