I think OTT would rather pay the WSH or OTT 2024 2nd and be done with it, but I would call this a fair trade too.

Sabres aren't going to take Ottawa's cap dumps. Kastelic would struggle to make Rochester's lineup, and I'd rather have Cederqvist than either of them. Combined with dumping Jokiharju for no reason, if they don't sign Severson there defense is significantly worse. 0 interest in helping Edmonton for nothing in return as well. Severson signing is probably the only thing they should do

Pretty self explanatory those trades are terrible and Severson signing is the only thing out of all this they would consider

What's kovacevics cost alone? The other stuff is mostly stuff that we don't need or want.

he is invisible. just does the little things right. you don't notice him until he misses the net by 45 feet but he's solid in his zone.

Almost like that's the name of the board. The Sabres aren't a dumping ground for the NHL. 0 reason they make any trades that don't make them better immediately. Collecting a bunch of 3rds and AHLers doesn't do that

OTT decline, Kastelic is a excellent 4C, with a 60%+ FO win rate, OTT is not trading him

Exactly. It would be stupid to trade Kastelic who could be your solution at 4C for years. He's fantastic on face-offs, good defensively, strong as an ox (on a soft team) and will continue to be cheap. He can score goals too. His problem is that he is playing in a system that makes Dominique Ducharme look like a perennial Jack Adams coach

Zaitsev salary will be 2.5 after his bonus get paid. The price to dump him won't be close to that. And yes I would much rather give up a 2nd.

Buffalo is also not the type of team who will take on his contract

Ottawa declines

You don't like Kastelic? I wouldn't trade him for a 2nd...

So it's like paying a 2nd + 3rd + 7th to dump 1 year of Zaitsev at 2.5 salary? No thanks

1. It's not that I don't like Kastelic.

I just see him as a 4th line player that plays less than 10 minutes a night with not much offensive upside.

He would be a healthy scratch on some NHL teams.

2. The 3rd is for 2025, which is like an eternity for the team that needs to use that pick.

3. The 7th is what Cederqvist is worth IMO.

4. We need extensions for DeBrincat and Pinto, which should eat up about ~12 million of the ~17 million we have in projected cap space for next year.

We then need 4 more forwards, 2 more defencemen, a backup goalie and 2 healthy scratches with just ~5 million in cap space left over.

Zaitsev's salary is 2.5 million, but his cap hit is 4.5 million.

So, getting rid of his cap hit would make a world of difference.

1. It's not that he's impossible to replace but you need to fill that spot adequately and I find that Kastelic could be an answer for at least the last 5 years. It doesn't matter if he would play on the Bruins or not

Yes they will get rid of Zaitsev 4.5 AAV, it should only be a pick after his bonus is paid, not a roster player

Why would Edmonton do that? If they wanted to dump Puljujarvi they could just let him walk in free agency this summer, they aren't paying to move him.
