Exactly. It would be stupid to trade Kastelic who could be your solution at 4C for years. He's fantastic on face-offs, good defensively, strong as an ox (on a soft team) and will continue to be cheap. He can score goals too. His problem is that he is playing in a system that makes Dominique Ducharme look like a perennial Jack Adams coach
Zaitsev salary will be 2.5 after his bonus get paid. The price to dump him won't be close to that. And yes I would much rather give up a 2nd.
Buffalo is also not the type of team who will take on his contract
Ottawa declines
You don't like Kastelic? I wouldn't trade him for a 2nd...
So it's like paying a 2nd + 3rd + 7th to dump 1 year of Zaitsev at 2.5 salary? No thanks
1. It's not that I don't like Kastelic.
I just see him as a 4th line player that plays less than 10 minutes a night with not much offensive upside.
He would be a healthy scratch on some NHL teams.
2. The 3rd is for 2025, which is like an eternity for the team that needs to use that pick.
3. The 7th is what Cederqvist is worth IMO.
4. We need extensions for DeBrincat and Pinto, which should eat up about ~12 million of the ~17 million we have in projected cap space for next year.
We then need 4 more forwards, 2 more defencemen, a backup goalie and 2 healthy scratches with just ~5 million in cap space left over.
Zaitsev's salary is 2.5 million, but his cap hit is 4.5 million.
So, getting rid of his cap hit would make a world of difference.
