The Muzzin trade was necessary at the time because the Leafs defense was in complete shambles, had Dubas not made that trade, and just kinda rolled with the same blueline, he probably doesn't have a job today

Why would Muzzin not being traded for effect things like Tavares being signed when Tavares was signed long before Muzzin was traded for? Half these things stem from the Tavares signing rather than the Muzzin trade.

As @deys3232 said, people saying the Muzzin trade should be taken back forget how necessary it was at the time. The leafs defense was absolute crap and it needed some stability.

Unless you are talking about the Jarvis-Marleau trade. Then I agree

A quick look at my favorite team should tell you that I’m talking about Jarvis. Canes thank the Leafs for being quite dumb. That being said, I don’t think LA would revert the Muzzin trade

The team was titled “Leafs never traded for Muzzin” so my thoughts went there first, but since you were a canes fan I wasn’t sure.

Yes, that Marleau contract was dumb and the trade was necessary but still really dumb. Leafs missed out on a great player in Jarvis.

Yah I think LA is perfectly happy with that trade.

Dumping Marleau was necessary too, and that was the cost. There's no guarantee that they would have even drafted Jarvis anyways or that he would even be viewed in the same light as he is now (by Carolina and some Leaf fans at least).

Jarvis is good but they can do without him still, it's not like he's a top player in the league right now. Chances are that by the time he is an impact player, that the Leafs (and other teams) would have missed or got someone else in the draft.

Dumping Marleau was necessary. Anyone with a half a brain would have been able to plan ahead so that he was only given a 2 year contract, but apparently not Lou lol. Without dumping him the Leafs would have been absolutely screwed.

However, it doesn’t change the fact that it cost a fortune and was a bad trade, on its own without context. A first rounder to dump a one year deal is quite ridiculous.

Jarvis isn’t a superstar or anything (and like you said, no guarantees they would have picked him), but you can’t tell me a guy like Jarvis wouldn’t have been very useful considering scoring depth is probably the biggest weakness on this team.

I'm not saying that he wouldn't have been useful, but considering that he's having a sophomore slump and only has 7 goals, I don't think he even has that rookie season if he were part of the Leafs. He would probably be more or less like Robertson in and out of the line up.

Even if he did do well though, the guy was on pace for 20 goals in his rookie season which isn't something out of the question for a lot of middle six players, and of course Jarvis doing it on his ELC would have been great value but it's still isn't enough. So, over these last 3 years since he's been drafted I don't think it makes much of a difference, it's just something that would have been nice (as far as we know).

Let's say he breaks out next season in his contract year, then you're kissing goodbye to him or Nylander or someone anyways. So that's why even in hindsight, I personally would do it again. If Jarvis was scoring around 30 goals though that would be a different story. If he ends up being a superstar after 5 years being drafted, well then it's really just unfortunate but during that time so many players would have been drafted and missed.

the lamest acgms are the ones that just reverse every trade. yes, if leafs didn't do these trades they would have the players they traded away or let go. or maybe not, who knows.

Yah I see what you are saying. He’s not really a difference maker and it’s not the end of the world that they don’t have him. Just saying ideally you don’t pay that much to dump Marleau.

Well, ideally you only sign him 2 years in the first place lol, but you know what I mean.

If this never happened than all of these would have happened

If Leafs never traded for Muzzin how does that = them not signing JT who came before lul.

Kadri would have been gone anyways as the man had b2b suspensions

And so on.
