Moves in the offseason

Created by: glarson17
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2023
Published: Jan. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Colorado trades from a position of strength to a position of need. Noted that couture could net a good return especially with the amount of retention here.

Buffalo was rumored to be one of the only teams able to fit Karlsson in their cap. Karlsson would have to waive and Buffalo would have to be interested but I would think something along these lines is close.

Leafs get more cap flexibility moving out Murray

Sharks also buy out Vlasic, labanc and simek could also be buyout options. I feel this is just as competitive if not a more competitive team next year.

1.
SJS
  1. Foudy, Jean-Luc
  2. Girard, Samuel
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (COL)

COL
  1. Couture, Logan ($2,500,000 retained)
  2. Megna, Jaycob
Additional Details:
Not sure Newhook is ready for 2C, adding couture would ensure he has plenty of time to fully develop and when he does, couture can drop down to 3C or play wing.

Megna is a big Dman and would be a great add on D and is league minimum cheap.

Avs can't afford Couts at that cap hit and I question if he can keep up to the Avs pace of play

Newhook has taken his game to a new level lately and this trade didn’t make sense of avs,

Couture as his age and only partially retained is not worth jt

That package is an over payment

I don't know which article the op is referring to, but I'll give you the gist- the Sabres have cap space and are loaded with futures, so we really should try to send him there. It's a great fit...for the Sharks.

Leafs obviously aren't paying a top prospect to move out 1 year of a goalie who's playing well enough this season than you are playing him as your starter.

Some interesting trades here. The EK65 trade to Buffalo does make a lot of sense, biggest hang up would probably be if EK actually agrees to go there this summer

I can’t find the specific article but it was mentioned by Craig Button on TSN and yes the primary reason was they have a ton of cap space

Buffalo has no need for Karlsson. Just because they have cap space, doesn't mean they need to fill it

At that retention he’s only $500,000 more expensive than Girard so yes they can actually

Craig Button of TSN offered his own opinion (which is often way-off in left field to begin with) about where he thought Karlsson would be a good fit - and suggested Buffalo. For someone like Button who is always quoting and referring to public statements that Adams and Granato makes, his theory made no sense and ignored everything that Adams keeps saying: he is not going to add older players that will prevent his younger players from roster spots nor will he commit to big cap hits until he's extended the Sabres' core players. Unless Karlsson plays on the 3rd pairing and the Sharks retain 50% of his cap hit for the remainder of his term, Button's theory is absurd.

Past this season, they can't. It would leave the Avs with an elderly slow center making 5.5m for 4 years and 500k less in cap space for 23-24, while having to replace the one of the most versitile dmen on the avs and extend Newhook, Byram+.

No, it does not for all of the obvious reasons anyone following the Sabres would know:
1. Their GM has repeatedly said he won't add older players that will block the path of his younger players - if a 33-year old Karlsson were added, it would mean demoting either him to the 3rd pairing (unlikely) or Jokiharju to the 3rd pairing (also unlikely).
2. Their GM has repeatedly said he won't take on any cap situations that compromise his ability to first lock up the contracts of his young core. Even if the Sharks retained 50%, Karlsson's cap hit is high and Dahlin, Cozens and Power all will be earning big cap extensions soon.
3. The Sabres defensive play - not their offense - has been their weakness all season. Karlsson's value is for his offense, not his defense.
4. Dahlin is the clear # 1 defenseman at 5x5 and PP, with Power destined to be right behind him. Karlsson has been the main guy his entire career - and he'll definitely expect the same on any new team.

The entire notion of Karlsson and Buffalo is utter nonsense and baseless.

Oh Button. The Sabres do have cap space, but it's going to go away quickly. Thompson is getting a 6 million dollar raise, dahlin is due for a massive contract, cozens is going to get an almost point-per-game two-way center contract, and owen power is going to command a likely large contract in a couple years. We have defensemen that were first overall picks that can handle the offensive stuff, I wouldn't hate a couple defensive d that finish their checks, but you really just have to look at the roster for about 30 seconds to realize that Karlsson would not be a good target. There's a reason Button is a former gm.

i dont hate the idea of murray being part of a trade away
but not for topi
realistically the value the leafs would send out has to be more worth it than just buying murray out
which is like 700k next year
and 2 million in the year afterwards
topi is worth more than that so it would be a no

if there is someone else that might be interesting to yas trade could still happen
just not for that
