CBJ need room for Jiricek and I doubt they move Peeke over Boqvist
CBJ need a top 4 dman for a couple seasons and that dman (Matheson in this scenario) will be replace by Mateychuk or Svozil in a couple years

Matheson trade is terrible for CBJ, and in any case, I doubt Matheson waives that NTC to come to Columbus. In the Oilers trade, you can probably remove Olivier and Puljujarvi and it becomes more probable. Also, you managed to trade for Puljujarvi but neglect to extend him.

Matheson isnt terrible, I don't like him personally but he is a solid top 4 dman
In the Oilers trade, you could probably remove the retention, Puljujarvi, Olivier & the 1st round pick and replace it with a 3rd round pick
I didn't neglect to extend him, I just didn't qualified him and he walks for free

I think JP is a cap dump and EDM need to trade him to activate Yamamoto
They could get their dman + a depth physical forward but they have to pay a 1st & a 3rd

I'd be pretty happy with this for CBJ. The EDM trade is more or less FMV for Gavvy (though I don't think they move Mathieu - CBJ love their B6 Tuff Bois).

The MTL trade is interesting. Boqvist's value is likely around a high 2nd or so, IMO. He's got a lot of offense to his game, but not much D, which is what CBJ need on our blue-line right now. MM could slot in as a Gavvy replacement for a year or two while Mateychuk and Svozil develop.

And Matheson's underlying numbers are pretty solid.

I don't hate that MTL trade, but I do feel like CBJ could get a little bit more for Boqvist. Maybe Matheson+ a 3rd or 4th?

Don't trade Olivier though! The guys love him and he works hard. He's a real good 4th liner to have, especially with so much skill up front, they'll need a guy who can protect them.

MTL have three 2023 4th so I could see them trading the better 4th between PIT & VGK pick

CBJ would have to think long and hard about it. All boils down to how much they like Matheson. If it's me, I think I take that to get a steady and defensively respectable top-4 LD to replace Gavy.

to add to that: cbj has a big glut of RHD and a big need at LHD behind werenski. matheson's game is more well-rounded.

from the cbj perspective it makes sense, but i'm also really high on matheson.
