Look how much money comes off the books for Toronto at the end of this year. If they can’t extend him, money won’t be the problem. They are clearly in the mode of winning now, so honestly the biggest asset you get from trading him is the player or players you use that cap money on instead. So trading him forces a result that’s about as bad as him choosing to play somewhere else

of course they re-sign him, anyone who thinks otherwise is just hoping because they dislike the leafs

I think this is actually a really interesting time to bring this up, mostly because of how active toronto has been around the deadline. On the surface, it doesn’t make much sense. Why this year? Why not wait until next year when boston could be a shell of themselves. Tampa could look a whole lot different with some new contracts kicking in and some expiring contracts. Seems like next season should be the all in year.

Unless….they’ve had preliminary talks with matthews and they know he isn’t going to extend long term, and they think they’ll have to trade him - pushing this year to the, “All in,” year.

Well the Leafs don't trade him the season, as the Leafs have Cup hopes. I would't worry his NTC next season. If the Leafs "retool" next season they could trade, to team that could afford his cap and eight year contract. Due to Matthews high cap, a trade probably won't happen till Feb 2024 TDL. If the Leafs do trade I think the Kings is the team. IMO he wants to play there and Kopitar has an expiring contract in 2024.
But if the Leafs are trying contenders maybe they don't trade Matthews, Nylander and Brodie next season. If they leave as UFAs, well the Leafs just gotta spend that newfound wisely.

You are about a season too early for this question. Matthews is signed through next season which means the Leafs can't even talk to him about an extension until July 1st.

He has a no move clause that kicks in next season so if they talk to him next season about an extension and he says he wont resign then he walks away from the team and they get nothing for him

Yep and the Leafs are the 4th best team in the league while loading up for a playoff run. Of course they aren't going to trade their best player, especially when they haven't even talked extension with him yet.

If we're going to talk about this, then it would me more accurate to discuss trading him at the draft. If I'm not mistaken, July 1st would be when the NTC kicks in.

I'd have to imagine that the Leafs and his agent have at least had preliminary discussions and hopefully have a feel for if he's at least open to re-upping.

Unless Matthews outright tells them he doesn't intend to extend (and even if that's the way he's leaning I would still have doubts he'd openly communicate that to the leafs)...I can't imagine the leafs remotely considering trading him. Until his name is on a contract with a different team, they'll cling to hopes that they can get a deal done.

So I think there's a better chance he walks for nothing vs gets anywhere close to being traded...and I think that's the right play. You can't move him this summer because you're scared of this scenario
