1. Thanks for putting in his name right, just shows how much I’ve paid attention to names, especially those I already think I know how to spell 💀
2. From my perspective, especially as time went on and during the playoffs it really felt like Brunette had almost no idea how to coach a team, they got lucky in round 1 Laviolette was just as incompetent (that series might be the most poorly coached series in NHL history) then got tactically spanked by Jon Cooper in round 2
And seeing the success Florida has had since they kicked him to the curb, I think it’s safe to say he was the problem the whole time.
Look at what Minnesota’s offense did in his time there. Look at Florida’s goal output…increased every year he was in charge of offense. Look at New Jersey’s improvement between 2021-22 and 2022-23. Health, decent goaltending, maturation…there were a lot of factors, but Brunette was probably the biggest. NJD played the same system as Florida (which led the league in scoring, won the Presidents trophy, for which Brunette was named Jack Adams finalist).
Lindy had been using a much more north-south system that used speed, possession, transition to attack straight ahead. Brunette added two main wrinkles that made it all click. First, was around the notion that dman turning the puck over in the corners hurts less than turning it over in open ice. So our dmen held onto the puck longer in d-zone, which allowed the forwards to get into open space, which improved exit efficiency, and transition game. Second, was moving to a more East-West game on transition, especially after gaining neutral zone or gaining o-zone. This leads to reduction of blocked shots, which increased scoring chances via more shots on net. It was the same system as Florida and it worked.
I think Brunette’s track record has been proven enough that one could assume Nashville’s 28th ranked scoring will improve considerably next year.
