if they move one of the core 4, as they should, it should be Marner IMO.

Tavares is best case but he is unmoveable
Nylander would be a horrible message since he actually shows up for the playoffs, although i feel like he will be the scapegoat.
Matthews is still your elite, franchise center. If it is between Matthews and marner, Marner is clearly the guy you move.

Brett Pesce is a player that if you have him you should never move him. He’s too important

Don't think Matthews fits into any team cap. Canes who are doing quite well thank you aren't trading three regulars, and a first for two years of Marner. Kinda silly to base a trade on an extension, and eight years of of Pesce starting at the age of almost 30 looks age awful for any team

They have to pay or replace aho, necas, teravainen, Jarvis, pesce, skjei all at the same time.

They have so much cap space and the only one getting off his ELC is Jarvis.

There is no way to get value for MM because he cannot sign an extension. Two years of Marner for all that?!

Canes pass. You want a young roster player and two core pieces of a team that is better than Toronto for Carolina to take on more money against the cap? Drop Pesce and flush this deal out with like Morrow, another 1st, Suzuki etc and maybe. But this construction is an easy decline without thinking

Necas is going to more than double his cap, Aho is going to make north of 10, Skjei could genuinely make 8, and (if they retain him) Pesce could double his cap hit.

Marner could be very good on the Canes, but the cap structure the Canes have would make it near impossible to retain Marner when he comes due to be resigned. Marner will likely be asking in the 12mil range, and with Aho getting at least 9, Necas likely getting anywhere between 5-7mil, Jarvis likely getting 4mil or less on a bridge deal, 5mil+ long term, as well as guys like Skjei and Pesce who likely get the Pelech/Pulock type deals, as well as losing Turbo in UFA, they be will be up against the cap without having Marner in the mix.

The Canes have also shown this post season, that without big names like Patches, Svech, and Turbo, they can still score at will, as well as shut down at an elite level. Marner was amazing in the regular season, but if he is just going to disappear all because he made the 2nd round, Canes are better off not touching him. Would love to see Marner in a Canes jersey, but is neither realistic nor practical.

I think that it's more than likely that they keep both Pesce and Skjei
