Competitive but Rational

Created by: Haggishands
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2023
Published: Jun. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This isn't a Stanley Cup-calibre team, but it should be competitive. The team is unlikely to add anyone substantive on defence, as they simply do not have the wiggle room to do so. A healthy Hronek will be the big addition.

Up front, Garland seems the most likely to be moved - particularly after such a positive WHC performance. Beyond that, I don't see many of the 3C UFA's as fitting within our salary structure.

Bjugstad isn't a particularly strong 3C, but the options are limited. A trade is a possibility, but anyone who would fit within our (limited) salary structure isn't likely to be someone that a team would want to part with. Filling in around the edges is a lot more likely. The team will bank on a healthy season from Demko, OEL, and Mikheyev, and positive progress from Hollander and Podz. That is how this team will challenge for the playoffs next year. Anything extreme or extensive seems unlikely this off-season. They have too much riding on next off-season to commit big $$ this year.

Additional Details:
Garland has some positive value around the league, and his strong WHC performance will likely help that. He is a tenacious puck reliever, and a creative player, and Bedard would benefit from having a player like him who could do the dirty work down low to retrieve pucks. The Canucks are (unfortunately) selling low, but this is the position they've put themselves in. Katchouk is a Vancouver boy with some potential as a grinder, and the Hawks won't miss a 3rd round pick. I've added

  1. Garland, Conor ($950,000 retained)

I feel like garland to chi does not make a lot of sense unless they really want to start being at least competitive in yr one with Bedard, it is good value for garland as you are right with Vancouver putting themselves in a sell low situation with Garland

Garland is a cap dump who played on the 3rd line for most of this season, it doesn't matter what he did in the WC, there was no talent in that tournament and it was evident with Germany and Latvia medaling. Hawks will be moving draft picks to move up in the draft or acquire young RFAs, they will not be acquiring cap dumps and paying for it.

I understand your sentiment here and think its pretty realistic, but I personally think that we'll see at least one move made to improve the team. This team probably isn't good enough.

I understand the cap restrictions but I am a little confused with the vision for this team. Not good enough to ensure the team makes the playoffs, but not bad enough to ensure a top 10 pick. I feel like a path needs to be picked and fully commit to.

I think garland will return more than that without retention, if Vancouver is retaining for multiple years and garland is only a 4m player he’s gotta return a 1st

Garland albeit would get top 6 mins isn't a need necessarily and we don't need to be paying to reach the floor. Katchouk made a good impression at the end of last season to suggest he could be a very handy bottom 6 guy longer term or at the very least fetch a 4th at the TDL for a contending team looking to add some grit that can skate with a bit of skill to their depths.

I'm going to go against the grain of all my fellow Hawk fans and say the Hawks might consider this under the right circumstances. I don't agree that Garland is a cap dump. He's a useful player who's overpaid.

I can see Garland being part of a larger deal where Hawks move up to #11. If that doesn't happen, and the Hawks don't make another deal or sign a UFA that nets them a top 6 F, this trade could potentially happen. Hawks need at least one more forward capable of playing top 6 minutes. Garland can be that. At $4m a year, I'd part with a 3rd and Katchouk.

Wrong SoCal team for a LhD in the making. Los Angeles would be interested in Rathbone, not Anaheim.

But we don't have to pay draft capital for someone like Garland. There will be other useful players who the Hawks can sign for just money.

Which is essentially what I said. Hawks would only do this if they can't sign any UFA's. Garland isn't a cap dump if Canucks are retaining on him. A 3rd round pick and a 4th liner isn't a steep price for a consistent 40 point player the Hawks can easily afford if they can't sign a better option. They need at least two top 6 players next season even after adding Bedard.
