The difficulty of improving the team while also not spending too many futures

Created by: edeangel84
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 4, 2023
Published: Jun. 4, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In order to build up on futures that we desperately need and make the team deeper, a difficult decision has to be made, keep a fab favorite and hope you also can resign him, or try to find the best deal for him. I think Dubas has the guts to listen to offers on Jake. I do not expect him to be anywhere but Pittsburgh next season BUT if he were moved it would need to include a first round pick and some young players who can play right now. Columbus might be the team willing to jump in on a big time point producer like Jake is and they may even feel confident in resigning him given they shocked many people by inking Johnny Hockey. It’s clear they don’t see a rebuild and they expect to be in the playoff hunt or they wouldn’t have made an off the wall hire for a veteran coach.

In the second trade, we can use our cap space to take Bailey and a 2nd rounder from the Isles. They’ll need to find a replacement for Mayfield given he’s going to have a lot of suitors on the open market. Rutta is priced reasonably and isn’t a bad fit for that team. Poulin is insurance to make sure they get some kind of “future” in the deal. Holmstrom is an underrated cheap forward we can use for depth. The trade is basically Rutta and Poulin for Holmstrom. The 2nd is to dump Bailey.

Dubas got lucky walking into Toronto who had Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kadri, Brown, Kappy, Johnsson, Gardiner, Zaitsev, Rielly and Freddie. All within their prime years and the majority still on elc.

Now Dubas walks into Pittsburgh with Crosby, Malkin, Granlund, Rust, Rakell, Gruenztel, Carter, Letang, Petry, Rutta and Desmith. All players in their twilight years and with high price salaries.

Agree and just to add. Too many iffy or bad contracts that have NTCs. Gotta think the Pens just have to ride out the term of those contracts before they can get significantly better. Plus they have one of the worse prospects pool in the NHL. (same as the Leafs, which Dubas never seemed to care about)

I’d take this in a heartbeat, Marchenko is at best a 35 goal 50 point guy and the odds of the 1st turning into something are slim. Carlsson, Laine, Johnson, Guentzel, Gaudreau and Sillinger is an elite top 6

Everybody likes the prospects Dubas selected, but other than Knies, no one has been a hit.

Dubas traded away so many picks that true NHL prospects...hardly any. Picks going forward...few. All that for one playoff round win. Without cheap good ELC players, the Leafs constantly were signing aging non productive 30 year old UFAs.

Easily? Nah it’s a 40 goal scorer who can be your 2nd left wing! And none of your top future assets are going out the door. Honestly I can’t think of any reason to say no to that trade from your side. If anything we’re gambling on potential.

Easily. The Jackets already have Gaudreau and Laine and don't need another high-priced wing. The Jackets need Centers and 2LD with term. Guentzel is a rental that is unlikely to resign and the other pieces don't address the Jackets needs.

He didn’t walk into some golden job! Lol what a load of revisionism. He had Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Rielly. You should know as well as I know that Kapanen was living off dad’s name. Jake freaking Gardiner? Lol come on he was mediocre. Connor Brown is a fine depth player but they had to move that horrible Zaitsev contract. He also had to move the nursing home patient that was Marleau out, which cost the 1st rounder.

And then there’s the whole idea that all of this is now 100% his fault. Why is Shanny and his ZERO track record walking away Scott free from any blame? Above all of that though is the fact that your stars simply aren’t clutch players. Auston and Mitch are regular season superstars. That’s it though.

Teams that are trying to win a cup trade away draft picks. Why would you want a GM who wasn’t trying to make trades to win?

The thing that people don't get about these trades where you ask for guys like KJ, Marchenko, Sillinger, Jiricek, etc. is that in order to take advantage of the 28-30 year old players you want to trade for them the Jackets have to become a contending team immediately. They're not going to be a playoff team likely until 24-25 and they won't compete for a cup until 26-27 if all their young guys pan out. That means in this instance they just traded away Marchenko, who would be perfect for their window of contention, for Guentzel who will be 32 by the time they're hopefully a very competitive team and he'll be playing for someone else because he's not going to re-sign. These trades are incredibly easy to say no to.

There is no reason to trade Jake and there is no reason to retain. LW is already an area of need so moving your best goal scoring winger is a NO. Also, why move Rutta just to sign Holl? Also, why are you taking Bailey back and then sending him down? You have wasted 7.7 million on players you sent to wilkes.

I don’t see it that way and apparently their ownership doesn’t see it that way because they just hired the literal worst coach if you’re a rebuilding team. In typical capfriendly fashion, you’re overvaluing young players and a later 1st round pick and undervaluing an elite winger who can help them win right now. You also aren’t convincing me a team that won the hottest UFA of last summer over big markets that they can’t resign Jake. The Jackets major young assets are in no order:

Jiricek
Johnson
Sillinger
Mateychuk
Cuelemans
Chinakhov

I asked for ZERO of them.

I am saying that we would not want to trade assests for a wing who will probably not resign or would need to be resigned for at least $8mil per year when we have much larger holes to fill.
We would also not trade Marchenko unless it was in a package for a 1C with term.

Because the other players signed as UFAs are better than him. Also we can buyout Granlund but there’s still enough space left by burying him for a year and then buying him out next offseason. That way it’s 2 years of payouts to him instead of 4.

Marchenko is about your 8th piece as far as futures go. I didn’t ask for any of your major future assets and you’re getting one of the best wingers in the league.

Probably more like 5th right now. I would put him above Cuelemans and Chinakov on your list:
Jiricek
Johnson
Sillinger
Mateychuk
Marchenko
Cuelemans
Chinakhov

As dk325 mentioned above, Jake doesn't fit the timeline and Marchenko does.

That is laughable that you'd have Chinakhov, Ceulemans, or even Sillinger ahead of Marchenko. A 22 year old guy that can score at a 30g pace with the *travesty* of a lineup that was around him last year is not someone that's going to be thrown away for a 29 year old rental. Stop trying to preach to the fans that actually watch a team and know who it's players are. It's stupid af.

Then why trade for him? lol
You are also wasting valuable space. A buyout of Granlund makes his cap hit just 833,333 this season. That's over 4 mill in savings. His burried cap hit is over 3 million more than his buyout cap hit. Can't be wasting cap like that.

If your timeline is that of a rebuilding team then why hire the worst coach for that timeline? Nothing they’ve done makes any sense.

Delusional if you think Dubas has an easier start up with the Pens than what he was gifted from day 1 on the Leafs.

Still the fact that 4 out of 5 current best players on the Leafs weren't even Dubas' (Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly)

Hell not even the Leafs best current RHD belongs to Dubas, Liljgren.
