Doesn't matter have much cap space they have, overpaying for a 3rd line winger is dumb when they can weaponize that cap space before the cap skyrockets.

One of the worst GMs in the league, dudes so lucky he got Bedard. Literally Chiarelli 2.0.

Worst GM's in the League?

The dudes team has 19 picks in the first 3 rounds of the draft over the next three years, one of them being the most coveted draft pick since 2015. Taking over a rebuilding team.. id say hes off to a decent start.. this team isnt building to be good next year? another top 5 OA pick is the plan.

You have to pay to get players to sign in places that aren't going anywhere. This gives him time to establish his value and Chicago can flip him retained when the time is right.
The extra money is being spent with the expectation it will pay off. Player gets paid. Team gets free assets down the road. Win/Win.

They need NHL players for their lineup now that they will have Bedard.

This is clearly a short term overpayment to keep him around. They have so much cap that a few of these deals won't matter.

So you want a team full of cap dumps and Bedard and Jones? idk why you're so upset about the Hawks overpaying someone by $1M.

Because every time they do this, they make it harder to come out of this rebuild. They have at least six more players they need to sign. If they overpay by 30% each time, they are giving up at least a 1st rounder worth of cap space.

He's lucky he won Bedard. That has zero to do with skill. Let's see what he does with the other picks before we say he knows what he's doing. We've seen teams with many early draft picks wiff on them and be stuck in mediocrity.

What he's doing isn't hard, he's trading literally everyone for futures, but he's constantly getting underwhelming returns and overpaying for players. Now lucked into a franchise player, he's the reincarnation of PC.

I think this is all hot air. The cap is going up and they’re $16M below the cap floor with 14 contracts signed and several ELCs joining. He literally needs to overpay to hit cap floor. They have to be decent players with positive value. You can’t just take on 8 cap dumps because then he’s stuck with no leverage or positive value in trade market.

Not to mention he doesn’t plan to make Hawks competitive for 3 seasons. This contract is off the books by the time Hawks are even considering playoff contention. There’s no risk to the salary cap with this move.

I don’t disagree with you, Mr President. Ive been underwhelmed by his returns too. Chalk it up to rookie GM and no leverage? I will say the Debrincat trade is looking like a win more and more. Ottawa didn’t make playoffs and likely trade him at the draft. He had a down year by his standards so return will be less. And if Korchinski turns into a LD1 then it will be a win for sure.

Fingers crossed half of these top 3 round picks from 2022-2025 pan out.

I wouldn't say it's bad because it doesn't have long term implications on Chicago but it feels like a clear overpay just to keep the player in Chicago.

Think this is likely a move for the cap floor

People need to realize that the 14/23 roster doesn't include Reichel, Bedard, Soderblom and 2 of Vlasic, Phillips, or Kaiser who are all expected to be on the team next year (and because they've developed well not just forcing prospects along) and they all make under $1m. That puts them at 4 open roster spots while $11m under the floor. Add in Kurashev who they seem interested in keeping long term and that's 3 open spots and still roughly 8-9 million under the floor

I mean he's signed 3 contracts over 2 Million and I'd argue all 3 of them were overpaid.

Didn't Chiarelli Build a Stanley Cup Championship team in Boston?

Weak years tend to end with the worst contracts - like this one for example.
GMs get desperate and overpay bad players. See 2016

The intent is to retain half and flip him at the deadline, but they still needed to entice him to sign in Chicago on a tanking team. All that being said, it's a fine deal

You're missing the point and not a great take.

Chicago has to overpay players because they are outspoken that they are tanking; nobody wants to play in Chicago only with the risk of getting flipped to another team. The intent here, is they get a player they can retain on and flip him for a valuable asset, but overpaying is necessary right now for Chicago full stop.

Then they should overpay for 1 year. Offer him 1x5. 2 years is what kills this deal for me.
