Theres two possibilities in a Pesce trade

    1. RNH for Pesce swap with carolina adding a 2nd or 25'1st

    2. Broberg and Edmontons 25' 1st for Pesce

I don't see any other pieces from Edmonton which would intrigue Carolina

Canes decline, need SOMETHING back from Oilers in return. I can’t think of a single trade that works between these two teams where Pesce would go the other way.

We probably wouldn't take RNH because of his age and contract
I like the Broberg trade... it would set us up for a very good defense down the line with Morrow and Nikishin

RNH I'd argue doesn't have the value of Pesce. Yes, he had a 100 point season. But his career average before that is 50. Pesce puts up 30, and with an extension is younger and harder to replace.

As for other things EDM have that would intrigue the Canes, there's a guy wearing 29 and a guy wearing 97. Otherwise, even RNH I don't think would interest Carolina

That’s fair, I didn’t feel there was much from Edmonton that would make Carolina happy. Is there a team in mind that has the assets you’d want?

Agreed, not to mention Pesce is one of the best DFDs in the league

I'd argue RNH is worth more and not even for his offensive production. He is signed at a bargain over the next 6 years especially for a 65-70 point 2c and Pesce needs an extension for a d-man 30+ (which don't usually end well). Talent wise I think they're equal but due to contract situations the canes would have to add to get RNH. The second package is if they want to compete for a longer time (like how Florida restructured their core for that reason this past offseason). Broberg is just gonna be Adam Larson 2.0 and fits well into that top 4.

This is about where I imagine the deal starts and ends.

Nugent-Hopkins has a lot more perceived value among Oilers fans due to an outlier season. If he repeats it, maybe CapFriendly as a whole can open up to a conversation regarding RNH as a high-value player.

Carolina's issue right now is scoring, and by adding Draisaitl to this deal, Edmonton finds themselves in a similar hole. Even if it's some gaudy package like Necas, Pesce, a first, and a high-end prospect, we've solved one team's offensive woes at the sake of another. Edmonton can score at will but a large majority of it comes from the top two lines. Our recent exit to Vegas highlights just this (on top of the forever goaltending woes).

The two aren't really a good fit as trade partners beyond cementing Skyler Brind'Amour's rights with the Hurricanes organization in exchange for the rights to someone like Mattheos. If Pesce is to be an Oiler, or Draisaitl a Hurricane, it'll come by way of free agency.

RNH is already 30 and he's signed until he's 36 and for a 50 point guy, which is what RNH normally is, let's be fair here, Pesce's more valuable. RNH is solid defensively, but so is Kotkaniemi, Kotkaniemi makes less, and is 8 years younger. RNH doesn't have the value of a defenseman that eats genuine top-pairing minutes. You're sighting Hall for Larsson, and while Pesce is similar to what Larsson was, RNH does not have the offensive explosive talent Hall did. A much fairer comparable is Jordan Staal for what RNH is, or if you want to go closer to home a Backlund. While they're valuable players and great pieces to have, they're not worth top pairing shutdown guys.

Except this isn't anything close to what Nugent-Hopkins is. He's either a 50-point #3C or a 100-point #1LW. One of those is worth his AAV as is, the other isn't. We need to see some replicability to his past season before we can start handing out exorbitant claims as to what RNH is.

He failed at almost every opportunity he had this season to drive his own line and was sunk a la the Bismark during the playoffs when Woodcroft combined Draisaitl and McDavid. He could fill a #2C role on a retooling or rebuilding team but is best served as a complimentary player. You're greatly overvaluing this player right now, but you could be spot on a year from now. Unfortunately, teams like the Hurricanes are going to deal in absolutes (a Sith Lord?) and not in projections or hypotheticals.

Brind'amour will go to a rebuilding team

The reason he didn't sign with Edmonton is because he wanted a roster spot

I think he wanted a roster spot regardless and his agent wasn't able to find him a team that was going to rush him into the league unless it was somewhere the young man had absolutely zero interest in going (thinking Arizona). I don't blame him for signing close to home or near his family.

The oilers aren’t going to move off of the players it would take to make it work. I have no reason to believe they’d move RNH
