He spent most of season in AHL. Carolina needs NHL goalies now.

Montreal doesn't do that trade in a million years. I can think of more than 5 players in this draft I'd want over Lafreniere.

Tell me you have no idea what's going on in Carolina without telling me. Kochetkov is very young and a highly touted prospect.

Montreal is building for future and Carolina wants to win now. That is how it normally works.

He spent most of the season in the AHL because the Hurricanes had two very good goalies in the NHL and they didn't have a need to rush him. Now that he's had a couple of years to develop in the AHL and proven that he can handle NHL starts, it's his time to take over the starter role

All of the top 5 players in this draft would be 1st over Laf in 2020.

I would even say no teams in the top 10 would trade their picks for him. He's a good player and I dont want to diminish him but his progression since drafted does not jutsify that kind of gamble. We got Dach for 13th overall and late picks and he has basically the same kind of progression since drafted while playing in a premium position.

Speaking of Dach, he's already not that far from PLD, younger, cheaper for at least 3 years. Im not saying it would not take that kind of offer to snatch PLD but it would be such a dumb move. Chances are Dach at 25 years old will be as productive and even if not, he's more reliable overall.

I wouldnt even do a 1v1 PLD-Dach trade for those reasons even if PLD is more valuable right now.

Oh and I like Barbashev, Hathaway and Soucy as UFA targets but its not yet the time to spend that kind of money and term commitment in our rebuild

Laf with his draft year hype could go in the 3-5 range this year, he just turned out to be an epic bust

So Carolina is gonna trade a top 10 goalie prospect (Wheeler, The Athletic) for a mid starter, a mid defenseman, and a 2nd?

Ok I give you that, I got some recency bias but I remember the hype was big and could rival with at least Carlsson and Smith. I stand by the rest of my comment tho!

What? I'm a Canes fan, and I would probably make this deal.

    Why is Montreal trading Xhekaj?

A sub-average goalie, a prospect, and 2nd for a young NHL-ready goalie is not a good deal for us.

Remind me again how many games Alex "goalie of the future" Nedeljkovic played for the Hurricanes before they traded him to Detroit for a 3rd round pick? 27. The exact same number than Kochetkov has played. The kid is still a rookie.

The contract is great, yeah. But Allen is serviceable, and they'll likely re-sign Freddie. Xehkaj played almost 16 min. a night for the Canadiens, and that second rounder is pick number 37 next year, which can help them bring in a goal scorer.

It's certainly one of the better trades I've seen on here. I'm much less tied to goalies than skaters.

The difference is that Kochetkov is significantly younger than Ned and was recently rated a top 10 goalie prospect by the athletic. It would be like the Devils trading Schmid.

But in terms of value, Kocketkov is certainly more valuable than Allen who hasn't been particularly good these last couple of years. I mean Xehkaj and the 2nd are great but it's shooting themselves in the foot by giving away a guy with a really high ceiling who's going to contribute on the big team next year at the most important position

Laf would be 3rd in this draft if you just consider pre-draft hype/stats. I think this is more of "this is what it would take NYR to trade him" than a "fair offer". NYR would only get rid of him for a massive overpayment.

Exactly which is why I think it might just be better to Offer Sheet him rather than hassle with the rangers front office

Most teams that have the compensation + cap + none of their own RFAs to worry about are likely bottom feeders next year (MTL included), even with Laffy in the fold. What team is going to want to give up a good chance at #1 and Celebrini next year (or even Eiserman at #2)? There have been only 2 offer sheets that haven't been matched in 25 years (and only 2 put forward in the past 10 years). GMs don't like this route generally because of how risky it could be. Now if there was a Stanley Cup contender with the majority of their core signed long term, that had the cap space, yes I would be scared... but there is no team that really fits all three boxes that ALSO has the draft picks.

The teams I see Montreal doing better than next year:
    Chicago
    San Jose
    Arizona
    Anaheim

I think Columbus is going to take a massive step forward with the additions they made on D + Werenski and Jiricek playing all season.

I view Montreal the same as the ducks-- have good players, but are missing too much (mainly defensively) to really compete with most teams.
