Karlsson trades

Created by: glarson17
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 17, 2023
Published: Jun. 19, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These are teams that can either fit in Karlsson’s contract or who I could see attempting to acquire him
Trades
1.
SJS
  1. Bourgault, Xavier
  2. Ceci, Cody
  3. Yamamoto, Kailer
  4. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
  5. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Edmonton has been openly saying it’s a cup or bust next year. Believed if Holland can’t get it done this would be his last year as GM. Edmonton decides to go all in with getting Karlsson.
EDM
    Karlsson $3 mil retained
    2.
    SJS
    1. Driedger, Chris
    2. Geekie, Morgan [RFA Rights]
    3. Nelson, Ty
    4. 2024 1st round pick (SEA)
    Additional Details:
Seattle got a taste of the playoffs and want some more. Getting Karlsson elevates this team quite a bit imo
    SEA
      Karlsson $2.5 mil retained
      3.
      SJS
      1. Bar, Jack [Reserve List]
      2. Bourque, Mavrik
      3. Marchment, Mason
      4. 2024 1st round pick (DAL)
      Additional Details:
Dallas is a dark horse for me to nab Karlsson, I think he puts this team on another level. Cap going back maybe Marchment, Faksa, do they get suter to waive?
      DAL
        Karlsson at $3 mil retained
        4.
        SJS
        1. Bernard-Docker, Jacob [RFA Rights]
        2. Forsberg, Anton
        3. Greig, Ridly
        4. Joseph, Mathieu
        5. 2024 1st round pick (OTT)
        Additional Details:
Obviously the sexy pick to send him home, though I’m not sure they want him back. Know they were linked to needing a RD so that’s an obvious comparison
        OTT
          Karlsson $3 mil retained
          5.
          SJS
          1. Fabbri, Robby
          2. Rasmussen, Michael
          3. Zadina, Filip
          4. 2023 1st round pick (NYI)
          Additional Details:
I don’t see Detroit being a front runner for Karlsson but they need to start competing soon. Maybe Stevie Y jumps at Karlsson to speed that up. Feel like Rasmussen would be someone Grier would be interested in. I like a lot of what Detroit has: Rasmussen, Berggren, Wallinder but I don’t think they want to move the later of the two.
          DET
            Karlsson $3 mil retained
            6.
            SJS
            1. Liljegren, Timothy
            2. Murray, Matt
            3. Voit, Ty
            4. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
            Additional Details:
I don’t see Toronto as a fit but we always have to assume they are doing something because they are Toronto
            TOR
              Karlsson $3 mil retained
              7.
              SJS
              1. Jokiharju, Henri
              2. Luukkonen, Ukko-Pekka
              3. Olofsson, Victor
              4. 2024 1st round pick (BUF)
              Additional Details:
I don’t think Buffalo is in the mix for Karlsson but they have the assets and space so they will always be tossed out there as a potential landing spot
              BUF
                Karlsson $3 mil retained

Just as a Wings fan I'd hate any trade for Karlsson.
It'll be expensive, and it'll be for a player that is just a bridge player. He won't be good (or as good as he was) in three years when we actually could use a player like him. Just means we lose a buncha young assets.

overall Karlsson won't be getting much. He still has too much term and AAV, even with $3m held.
I think Karlsson will get a 1st rounder and that's pretty much it.
Maybe a little more if bad money goes the other way

They'd give him away for free if they could, he isn't getting those kinds of returns even retained.

Why should teams give up a lot, in effect to acquire 8m EK? Just spend 8m on a UFA or two and keep those young assets.

I see Dallas including Faksa in the deal, not Marchment, and then buying out Suter. Cap would work then

Cant rule out vegas, they love shiny moves

They'd give him away for free if they could, he isn't getting those kinds of returns even retained.

Of course we wouldn't give him away for free.

No they aren’t looking to give away a 100 point Norris winner away

Why should teams give up a lot, in effect to acquire 8m EK? Just spend 8m on a UFA or two and keep those young assets.

Is $8 mil aav for 100 points bad all of a sudden?

Kind of an oversimplification of the player

There's more too it then that

Take out isles first and Ras and retain another million and it's closer

Lol so take a bust prospect and an overpaid winger with just as much injury issues for 100 point guy, oh and retain $16 mil of his deal? Come on now. That’s just as realistic as Edvinsson, Wallinder and Kasper for Karlsson

I don't see any reason why Detroit would be interested in Karlsson. Doesn't fit our timeline. Even if you took out Rasmussen that's too much to pay. At 8.5M his contract is probably fine for a team that wants to win now. I just don't see any scenario where we pay for alot for a defenceman that was on the ice for 128 goals against.

And over 20 of them were empty net goals so let’s drop the +/- and goals against stuff

I like the player but don't say he's a good at defense. He was let loose and not give one ounce of defensive responsibility. The season was awesome but he can't just go to most teams and just do whatever he wants on the ice.

That's the price for a 11.5M dman who has had 1 good year in the last 4 and going into his age 34 season with multiple years left

Only 20 but still. 108 goals against when there was a goalie? Plus minus may not be the most accurate but it shows a players tendencies. Karlsson isn't a good defender. He's great at producing offense, one of the best from the blue line ever in my opinion but fails at the guest job of a defenceman. Either way he doesn't fit Detroit's timeline so no point in arguing more. I know there are reports saying Detroit might be interested and I'm sure they are if it's cheap with retention. Also Yzerman doesn't leak anything so it's most likely just click bait.

One good season in four and at age of 34, is he a value? Yea I know that's subjective.
I don't think he would waive anyway. Former GM Wilson created a retirement home atmosphere in San Jose. The aging players are just content where they are and where the team is IMO.

San Jose had one of worst goalie tandems in the league last year, they struggled to stop a beach ball. 315 goals against on the year. So Karlsson was on the ice for 40% of the goals against last year (128). The sharks had 233 goals for this season of which Erik Karlsson received points on 101. He received a point on 43% of their goals for. I say he had more of a positive impact than a negative

I agree wilson did this. I don’t blame guys for getting paid Millions of dollars to live in beautiful California over some of the other locations of nhl teams.

Yeah cool bro, way to trash on a city cause you're a homer. Keep him and never make a wings trade again.

Honestly I always find it eye opening when users make these "multiple trade scenario" type AGMs and some of the values IMHO are either way too low and other way too high. Really puts certain players valuations into question. For example, the Seattle & Toronto deals seem quite low in comparison to some of the others.

Remove Greig and Forsberg (who Sens need). Greig was not available for DeBrincat or Chychrun, it's not changing here. I would also change Bernard-Docker to Lassi Thomson as Sens need a JBD type and can afford to spare a Thomson type. Will add a pretty good goalie prospect and a productive AHL forward who needs an opportunity

                2024 1st round pick (OTT)
                Thomson, Lassi
                Merilainen, Leevi
                Joseph, Mathieu
                Sokolov, Egor

If that's not enough, then happy to pass. Sens actually can't afford Karlsson and is not even a need anyway. Chychrun would actually need to go the other way, but that would take even bigger retention

Erik Karlsson (4.0 retained) for Jakob Chychrun + Mathieu Joseph?

Not sure how other Sens fans would see this
