Leafs 23-24 Off-Season Augmentation X

Created by: Hockey_Hippy
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2023
Published: Jun. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Giordano and Muzzin do not play this for whatever reason (retirement/LTIR).

The blueline as constructed would be fluid depending on form outside of Karlsson who would be welded to the 3rd pairing and 1st PP. Four of the eight there play both sides and Niemela did in Finland last season. You spend the season teaching Timmins how to handle the puck on his backhand.

In a year's time Pacioretty, Toews, Brodie, Lafferty, and Martinez are all off the books which will open up 15.65 million. Add in 4 million for the cap and this is easily enough for Matthews and Nylander with room left over to sign Jani Hakanpää to a short term extension.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Martinez, Alec ($2,250,000 retained)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (VGK)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (VGK)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (VGK)
  5. 2025 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Vegas gets six years younger on the blueline and a ready made PP QB on a team friendly deal structure wise. They retain but it goes away in a year. They give up picks but when has that ever been an issue for the Golden Knights?
VGK
  1. Rielly, Morgan
Additional Details:
The first shoe to drop in Toronto's blueline refurbishment. As gifted as Rielly is offensively, the Leafs need a defense with more balance and this is the first move in that direction.
2.
TOR
  1. Karlsson, Erik ($5,500,000 retained)
  2. 2023 1st round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
The Sharks finding a landing spot for Karlsson, grab a future top pairing defenseman in Liljegren and add more picks. It costs them the 4OV and a retention slot but the futures return makes it worth it given that whoever they select will likely not even be on the team in two years, possibly longer.
SJS
  1. Liljegren, Timothy
  2. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Parting with Liljegren is tough given his trajectory but Karlsson is a bona fide creator. Still without the 4OA, this is a deal that does not get made.
3.
TOR
  1. Lauzon, Jérémy
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Nashville parlays a player they acquired for a second and have on their third pairing into three play now prospects who will help speed along the roster turnover they are committing to. Kral steps in for Lauzon and will be ready to take McDonagh's spot when the latter's ticket is up. Holloway is a Barrie clone just a lot cheaper. Abruzzese is instant offense, something Nashville can use.
NSH
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Hollowell, Mac
  3. Král, Filip
Additional Details:
Toronto gets some oomph and penalty killing for the back end that's a bit more experienced than Kral for the window of contention. And they pick up a third.
4.
TOR
  1. Pettersson, Elias
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
The Canucks add a 200 foot winger who can play both sides and complement talent on a decent ticket which will allow them to move on much more easily from some of the financial roster bloat they still have and recoup the assets given up here plus more. That he lives just down the road from their best player should also not be overlooked.
VAN
  1. Järnkrok, Calle
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Leafs move on from Jarnkrok to gain roster and cap space but for their troubles move up a bit in the third round of the draft and add a prospect to the LHD ladder to replace Kral in the 6'3" Petterson.
5.
TOR
  1. Hakanpää, Jani
  2. 2023 4th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
The Stars make a place for Lundqvist and re-unite the Brothers Robertson.
DAL
  1. Robertson, Nicholas
Additional Details:
The Leafs grab another blueline beast and a 2nd round pick. They have a year to decide whether he is worth an extension.

The Karlsson deal doesn't get made. Why would SJ ever give the 4OA? They are better off trading Karlsson for a 1st rounder and calling it a day. It's not like the Leafs are even taking the entirety of Karlsson's contract. It's like SJ is paying for the "luxury" of retaining 5.5M per year.

LOL the fact you think the sharks would trade the #4. And Robertson has no value. No one will save the leafs with stupid trades like these

This allows you to deal the overpriced ones, as I said in the explanation.

Well, there is *the entire f*cking package the Leafs are sending* and the fact that *despite months of trying Grier can't get anyone to bite* Quit being a one sided moron and actually assess the value before coming down with a blanket condemnation because you simply do not like Toronto.

I'm not convinced of that. I actually like Liljegren. He'll wear the Tre Kronor in the Olympics before all is said and done. I think a lot of people basically like to hammer on anything Leafs related on this site for reasons.

Again, do you not think you could recoup a good defensive prospect plus a better asset than that pick for either of Boeser or Garland? I certainly do.

I do not think they would just trade it on a whim no. But Liljegren two or three years from now is the Leafs #1 RHD and he'd still be an RFA. That alone is worth the 4OA. Ask Calgary what they'd want for Andersson. That's who Liljegren is at that age.

You do realize that the 4th OV is worth more than both of those 1sts+the 2nd, right? So, even if you say Karlsson at 6M is equal to Liljegren, the deal is still terrible for the Sharks.

I'm not being a one-sided moron, I'm not even a Sharks fan and who said I don't like Toronto? You are clearly undervaluing the 4th OV (even if you ignore the strong draft class aspect of things) and Karlsson @6M. I'm not trying to be rude, but in terms of value, this is probably the most lopsided trade that I have seen being proposed on here. If you don't believe me, have a look at a draft pick value chart.

Lol you can’t just pick a random right handed guy who’s actually good and say that’s what he will become . If he was more than a #4-5 guy he would’ve shown it by now. #4 pick is either smith carlson or mitchkov. Guys who will be stars, they don’t get traded for third paring D men. Hes 24. What you see is what you get. No one in an NHL front office thinks Lili will magically become a top pairing guy at 27 after he has already been unable to play top 4 for years. Honestly one of the worst trades I’ve seen on here

Let's say you're right. Why are the Sharks trading Karlsson @6M in this deal? If it was the full cap hit then, at least we can say value-wise, it's Karlsson for future considerations, and the package is for 4OV.

Canucks decline. We have too many wingers already.

The Reilly trade to Vegas is out to lunch. 4 picks including 3 in the first two rounds. Vegas isn't afraid of trading picks for players but they do it a lot wiser then that. Also no chance the sharks give up 4th overall. You're talking about giving up a franchise changing center like Leo Carlsson or Will Smith or generational winger in Michkov for Liljegren and a couple late first rounders. There is a lot of you in leafs land that think way too highly of Liljegren. No way he's enough as the centerpiece to get someone to give up 4th overall. If he was so amazing how does he end up in the press box so often including playoff games?

"The Leafs should trade Rielly for Boeser, then trade Nylander for a #1 LHD!" - The logic you're using.

See, the Canucks could just not do the trade in the first place, not lose their best defensive prospect, and trade a winger for another defensive prospect anyway.

I dont even know if the return on the sharks deal is enough to get the 4th overall not just in terms of value but the sharks need a game breaker way way way more than we need the type of player at the end of the first and a struggling 2nd pair defenseman (we have Mario), at basically half retention I think that return is good for karlsson, but certainly not karlsson +++++
