Laughton Bert Pesce Barby

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 27, 2023
Published: Jun. 27, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Matthews extend 12m x 8 years
Pesce extends 6.5m x 8 years

Pesce for Nylander seems like a decent swap for both teams. I value Nylander more, so I added the 1st vs 3rd. BUT I can definitely see the scenario play out 1 for 1 straight up.

Philly get a 1st, very good RD prospect, 1 year cap dump - Leafs get Laughton half retained and a 3rd. I think this trade makes sense for both teams based on where they are at in their windows.

Bert and Barby would both be huge adds.

I really like the look of this team.

Thoughts?

We have all deserved and are owed a Pesce for Nylander swap. This comment dates back many years…

Pesce is just another Brodie, no-physical play. Leafs need big nasty d-men, leafs aren't trading Willie unless they get a power forward or nasty d-man.

Just had a conversation with CameronSquires about the ask for Laughton. https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/732935?post_id=4229864 That is not going to do it especially with retention and the Murray dump.

Pesce is a step up from Brodie. And Brodie is fantastic. Yes I would prefer a big bruising dman who can also play top pairing minutes. But there are very few of those out there. Schenn and McCabe both lay people out on a regular basis. They are both rough to play against. We could go after Gudas as well. But Pesce is a much better dman than all those guys I listed.

Our D and bottom 6 were actually quite physical in the playoffs. We just need a bit more size/physicality in the top 6 and we could use an upgrade in the top 4 D. This AGM covers all of that.

If the flyers didn't take this package, they are silly. I can't see another team matching or beating this.

I could be wrong though. Niemela is a very good RD prospect, so there is a lot of value there.

I don't want Laughton at 3m a year. The real value for him comes at 1.5m cap hit.

Matthews will get more money, Pesce is not half as good as people think he is, definitely isn't worth 6.5 million and you'll miss Nylander carrying whoever he plays with.

Now that we're on that topic, what would it take to get Brodie in that deal with Pesce and Nylander? He could be a decent short term replacement for Pesce.

I personally really dislike the idea of trading Brodie. He struggled against Florida in the playoffs. BUT he was amazing all year and has been excellent since the Leafs got him. He is very good on the right. He is very good on the left. Trading Brodie almost negates getting Pesce.

My ask would be unreasonable.

We will see what Matthews get. I hope 12 x 8 is the max he gets. It's so hard to build a team otherwise. But I would be willing to pay him a max of 13 x 8.

What do you think Pesce will get?

And we will surely miss Nylander, if we trade him. Carolina will surely miss Pesce, if they trade him as well. But I think both teams become more complete with this trade.

Pesce us going to get overpaid by someone for sure. But just like Parayko, Pesce will look pretty terrible with higher expectations.

It’s debatable, but far from certain, that Pesce > Brodie. Maybe because he’s a Leaf or maybe because he is basically a non factor offensively - Brodie gets no love. He is an elite defender and put up equivalent if not better defensive numbers than Pesce. Every partner he plays with benefits… not saying Pesce is not good but he’s not miles ahead of Brodie, if at all - equal in my eyes. Brodie had an average playoffs it is true but Pesce didn’t cover himself in glory - all his numbers are underwater

You can have him at 3 mil if we take Murray. If you drop Murray you can have the retention. Given Hayes is soaking a retention spot for three years we can't retain on everything.
