We went from pretty much the top d core to a very thin one very quickly

Avs aren't trading two of their top dmen for one good but probably overpaid winger and a very good but soon to be overpaid winger. That completely blows up a cornerstone of their roster. McCabe helps a little but not nearly enough.

Nylander will need to go elsewhere.

Lekhonen is more valuable for the Avs than Nylander would be, he fits their system so well. Towes is a top 10 d man in the league. This is just an awful trade from an Avalanche perspective.

At first I thought an avs fan did this, but then I saw how lopsided the trade was and realized it could only be a leafs fan

Thanks for making the salary a round number

Girard has term, CGY needs players who aren't going to run for the hills... also why is everyone so down on Girard, the only reason colorado trades him is because Byram and toews are better

Ok cool, Calgary still has top of the league defensive depth. Girard is not a need at this point in time

I've never understood the Girard thing. He's a solid D guy locked up on a reasonable contract and he's been a big contributor over the years. You're exactly right that he is seen as the trade chip because of Byram and Toews. Nobody realizes that he'd be a top 1-2 pairing guy on just about every other team. Once some Avs fans bought into the hype that we needed a 2C more than anything else in the world, they started gutting the roster in other spots to get one.

I get that fact that on the avs 5mill for your 5th dman is pretty high but on a team that needs dmen 5mill for a 3/4 guy is pretty reasonable

Girard isn't the 5th dman. Makar and Toews are obviously the top two, with each averaging over 25 min. Byram and Girard are damn near tied at 21:53 and 21:30, respectively. That's your top 4, no matter what the lines look like on paper. For reference, Manson is way down at 17:41.

Manson was also hurt all year.. I expect a big year from him, I like the way he plays

If everyone's healthy, in my mind Manson is played ahead of Girard

It was the same in the prior year after Manson was acquired. And in the playoffs, Byram picked up minutes after Girard went down (not Manson).

I like the guy too, but he's well behind Girard for Bednar.

Ok but hear me out: Greg Sherman would've ABSOLUTELY made these trades. Which is why he's no longer employed in the league lol

If all 5 are healthy, the Avs have 5 Top 4 guys. And they all get top 4 minutes. This is only possible because Byram and Girard can both play the right side so they can jumble up the bottom pairs as Bednar sees fit. When all 5 are healthy they can shelter the 6th D pretty easily.
Makar and Toews get 25+ min
Byram 21 min
Girard 20 min
Manson 18 min
6th D gets the remaining 10 min
