Top4 RD targets for next year

Created by: gdhvbhfbngf
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 13, 2023
Published: Jul. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Need a defensive defenseman to partner with Edvinsson

-The Connor Murphy(CHI) and Adam Larsson(SEA) conversation starts with a 1st round pick so I wouldn’t entertain that idea

-Apparently the rule is that our D can only be 6’2 or taller

My preference:
1) Trouba 2) Tanev 3) Ceci 4) Peeke
Trades
1.
DET
  1. Trouba, Jacob
Additional Details:
2RD to partner Edvinsson. He wouldn’t go to Detroit if it wasn’t for his cap hit and that he’s from Michigan. Golden opportunity
NYR
need cap space. Need to retain 2-3M
    2.
    DET
    1. Tanev, Christopher
    Additional Details:
2y deal. 2RD in year 1, but at 35y, probably more suited as 3RD in year 2.
    CGY
      Free agent
      3.
      DET
      1. Ceci, Cody
      Additional Details:
      Plays 20min.
      EDM
Only if Pesce or Hakanpaa signs with oilers
        4.
        DET
        1. Peeke, Andrew
        Additional Details:
        If he’s available.

I think we just take Holl and Chiarot on the chin. We have Pellikka, lets just assume he'll pan out before getting a guy.

Trouba is physical but he isn't defensively elite, or even close to as good as his cap hit. Ceci isn't either. Andersson and Brodie are two elite defensive RD that might be available.

He's about 2m overpaid, but there is a case to be made for his locker room presence.

Rangers aren't interested in trading him away for free with retention while their cup window is open. If you want him for free you can have him, if you want retention you'll either have to pay, or depending on the market for him the Rangers would rather add picks than retain. Hard to tell what his actual demand would even look like. And this is assuming he waives his NMC, which he probably won't.

Why not sign Matt Roy? He'll be 29 and is from MI so he might want to come here once he's a FA.

Wallinder can play RD. I would like to see him slotted into the top 4 next year if he has a solid year in the AHL.

I don't think op is saying for free. Just who they would target

Couldn't agree more! Spectacular hits aside, Braden could step right in and do an equal or better job at a better price.

Sign Matt Roy ($4.5m x 4 ish type deal) or Pesce (around $6.25m x 8 years). Would be in far better shape.

The rule is defenseman should be 6’2 or taller. Andersson is 6’0 and Brodie is 6’1. Brodie is also left handed and Andersson probably cost 1st+2nd+prospect. Not worth it for a rebuilding team imo.

Roy is the best option. He is better defensively, but I can’t see Yzerman targeting him. Apparently they need to be 6’2 or taller. He also playing for a pretty good team as well, can’t see him leaving LA

You’ll need a 3rd party to retain, we won’t retain if we’re getting him off our books for sure.

Lindgren, Kakko and Schneider are all going to need raises next year. Trouba is the odd man out. Next year, Detroit is probably the only team on Trouba 15 trade list that can afford his caphit without 50% retention. The best deal for the Rangers is Trouba 8M for Fabbri 1y left at 4M. You can buy him out and save 7M in cap

I think Pellikka need 2y in Sweden and 1y in the AHL. If he’s ready before that, trade Holl/Trouba/Tanev/Peeke with 1 y left on their deal.

I believe that's the same track Yzerman has him on, hence the 3 years of Holl.

I would like Pesce on a 6-year deal, but Detroit isn’t a destination for top free agents yet. I think he goes to Dallas or another contender. Roy would be nice as well. I can’t see him leaving LA though. I think Trouba is Detroits only bet next year if they want a top4 RD taller than 6’2. Currently 3 years left on that Trouba deal makes him a good fit because that’s when Holl, Chiarot, Walman, Edvinsson contracts expires.

Remember when Winnipeg sold Trouba to NYR, it came down to two teams, Rangers and Red Wings. And most assumed Detroit at the time.

I think Trouba is as locked into his team as anyone. Doubt he moves anywhere.

Remember when Winnipeg sold Trouba to NYR, it came down to two teams, Rangers and Red Wings. And most assumed Detroit at the time.

Yzerman took over in 2019 and Trouba was traded that summer to NY. It wasn’t a fit for either Redwings or Trouba at the time. In 2024 there will be a fit for both player and the team.

Next year, Rangers need to hand out raises to Lindgren, Kakko and Schneider (potentially Laffy as well). Even if the cap goes up by 4M, they need to replace 800k Wheeler and fill out the bottom6 and bottomD. I think both teams and the player can help each other out.

You’re right, Trouba can stop this in 2024 by adding Detroit to his no-trade list
