Detroit passes, Not trading a less expensive Olli Maatta for a more expensive Jeff Petry.

If they get a big upgrade they do.

Detroit doesn't need Petry, We're fine at RD and Axel Sadin Pellikka should arrive by the 2025/2026 NHL season.

No it is true..

Whatever reason Pittsburgh in all these armchair deals wants rid of Petry, are the EXACT same reasons Detroit dosebt want him... age, cap hit, contract!, ability.. you name it

1) they wouldn’t be able to attract many free agents if they did things like that

2) I didn’t see JG in the trade!

They don’t want him gone they want Erik karlsson. Mike Sullivan has and still believes Jeff Petry is a top 2 d on any team in the league. Obviously though if they obtain Erik jarlsson the only way they can fit the cap is to move petry or letang. Obviously they will not be moving letang…

That’s a wild take saying he would be top two on ANY team in the league….. and if that was true there would be no way in hell they ever trade him.

Sullivan has said this many times since he has been in Pittsburgh. And the only way they would trade him in this circumstance is if they upgrade to the Norris trophy winner…

Even if it’s not true in others eyes he is definitely top 2 on Detroit and most other teams in the league. And he is from Michigan. There is no way the wings decline.

A backup goalie, a pick and a moderately better player?

They absolutely decline. Detroit most likely doesn't make the playoffs as it stands now. Petry doesn't change that. The team trying to rid themselves of Petry was in a fight with Detroit the last month of the season for a wildcard spot. If Petry would improve Detroit, Pit wouldn't offer him up to Detroit due to him (Petry) improving their chances of passing the Pens. It is a backwards way of thinking.

Detroit filled holes this summer, and SY has stayed the course by admitting he will overpay for FA, is tight sealed with draft picks, and cares a great deal for AAV and term. He signed Ghost as a PP guy and 2/3RD who can be flipped at the deadline. He signed Holl as a minute munching stop gap until the draft picks are ready (ASP/Gibson/Tuo). Lindstrom is back as a last shot younger player. Edvinsson is about ready, Wallinder and Johansson not far behind. Combine that with the Walman/Maata extensions.. Chiarot from last season, there is no more room.

1) A back up GK that the Sabres do not need Levi, Comrie and Luukkonen.
2) The fourth has moderate value.
3) Buffalo finally has LHD and RHD balance, adding Määttä would give the Sabres 5 LHD and 3 RHD.
Let's not forget Jokiharju is their best RHD Määttä would not crack the Sabres top 3.
4) Let's compare past trades:
Määttä traded for Dominik Kahun (currently playing swisserland) and round 5 pick and Brad Morrison a former 4th round pick now enjoying life in the ACHL
Jokiharju traded for 8th OA Nylander when Alex still appeared to have a decent upside.

There is no incentive for Buffalo make this trade.

A back up goalie they don’t need since they already have three goaltenders signed, a fourth round pick, which has a very small chance of ever being an NHL player by averages anyway, and Maatta, who is not actually marginally better than Jokiharju, but older. Not to mention, as has already been said, they don’t need another left-handed defenseman. Pittsburgh gets something useful, Buffalo gets a bunch of crap they don’t actually need or want.
