I cannot for the life of me understand why Pittsburgh is so infatuated with Karlsson. They are an old team whose window is rapidly closing with no future. So of course, the logical step is to sell the little future you have, get even older, and bring in a terrible contract. It makes no sense to me, and I am pretty confident that Karlsson wont repeat his 22/23 performance.

San Jose will probably get a pretty disappointing return, but I think both teams lose in this trade. I dont understand it at all

No because Petry is pretty clearly a bad contract (and even at like 50% retained it's not very valuable)

Washington 2.0 Remain as competitive as possible while Letang, Malkin, Crosby are still there and then worry about the aftermath later. The goal this year is to make the playoffs, and this achieves that.

Considering how much it cost CGY to dump Monahan, I am expected something like Pickering or a 1st with Petry (assuming we get Petry) or we offload back to Pittsburgh someone like Armia/Hoffman

I couldn't disagree more.
Regardless of whether Dubas moves futures or not, when Crosby and Malkin are done as top tier players this Penguins team is gonna be terrible for a long time.
With a super old core like that the only sensible thing to do is to double down on it as hard as you can and give them as good a chance at another few cup runs as possible.
Makes next to 0 sense for the Penguins to wait around another 4-5 years and hope that 2024 1st develops into some complimentary guy in the roster when Crosby and Malkin already are gone (or have declined away from elite levels).

I like this for Montreal, Hoffman and Pitlick (who both had no spots on the team) for Petry, Desmith, Legare and 2025 2nd

They've just added an 11 million dollar player for the next 4 years. That is going to go south EXTREMELY quick. Now, luckily for the Pens they didn't give up any prospects, but they did lose a 1st and a 2nd. It turned out to be a not half bad deal for the Pens, but it isnt going to be fun for long

Look man, if EK65 plays at a 1st pairing level for at least two years of his remaining deal and the Pens make the playoffs those two years, it will have been so worth it to make this rather inexpensive bet.
You're gonna tank from 2025 (maybe 2026) onward anyways, that 11m cap isn't gonna hurt the Penguins one bit.

SJ-PIT-MTL debacle.
All of said GMs are basically new in their job-posts.
Job-security gives them ample rope to swing for the fences sure enough.
Suspect, that same rope will also seal their downfall...
