Devils 8-10

Created by: Scottrollo
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2023
Published: Aug. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Devils have too many LDs at Utica and seem to want to improve veteran goalie depth, hence the deal for DeSmith. Allows them to play Akira Schmidt every day in Utica rather than once a week in NJ and gives extra depth in case of goalie injury.

If Devils decide they want Hellebuyck or Saaros, can trade Vanecek and Bastian plus prospects/picks, and still be cap compliant.

Filmon has to play Jrs. by rule but I'd put him on second line in Utica once that season is over and move Halonen or Leivo to third.

Burke, Noel, Almeida, and Kindopp are AHL depth and should probably be AHL contracts instead of NHL but can't do that here so sign to cheap two way deals.

I mean, Montreal has too many LD as well and New Jersey has too many goalies.

If Holtz has a good start this season, how about weaponising his future upside for a franchise goalie ?
Just a thought.

Habs would probably be available to retain some money for some compensation.

In total honesty. I do not think Schmid will only be playing once a week. I think its far more likely that he ends up splitting time with Vanacek 41,41 or 45,37 for Vanacek or something along those lines. I wouldn't even be that surprised to see Schmid get more games. I know you don't bank on unknowns but the amount of discussion where Vanacek gets 60+ games is kind of wild and I just don't see it happening

Honestly, I agree with you and I'd do an even split to see what he's got but Fitzgerald seems to want to eitehr upgrade from Vanecek as the starter or Schmid as the "backup" for this season based on what he's said.

Not spending him on a 30yr old goalie. It would have to be a Saros type situation.

I think people continue to overlook how much just dumping Blackwood and replacing his 20+ games with Schmid helps the Devils.

There absolutely no incentive for Hugues to make this trade. Retaining money can be a huge assets so wasting one for a second goalie who doesn’t make much money make no sense. Habs will likely be seller at the deadline and they likely use it to acquire valuable assets.
Tyce thompson would even have a spot with the Ahl Laval Rocket. Mtl have also a tons of pick a late round pick won’t make them pull the trigger.

Value for Desmith might be there, but none of the trade makes sense for Mtl. Trading Petry, Dvorak, and even Armia might be more important tasks for Mtl than trading one of the goalies, especially Desmith. On all of those contracts, they'd like to retain(including Allen).

In the end, using a retention spot on Casey would only leave one for Petry or someone else(including a deal like Boninos last year). Tyce, although I liked him when I went to a Utica game is not the biggest add to the Habs, then to give up a pick also probably isn't in Hughes' ideas.

(Hughes has yet to give up picks except for same round swaps and for 1st round picked players. Doesn't really mean much, but that he's not keen on giving up draft capital)

Why is Montreal even retaining here? DeSmith isnt close to whom they'd think would use with retention. This isnt an opinion. This is impracticality and an easy call-out. They are rebuilding and wont waste a spot they can use at the deadline as a broker at worst not to mention a litany of other names. Talk about doing things to do things.

Yea just read after I saw your message. Was 10 years ago when he was in college but a real dirtbag thing and Fitz has been chasing character players so could likely be a deal breaker.

He's giving up a pick but getting a higher one. So its really a swap, although not a big one. And agree with you on the retained salary spots but I can't imagine he's going to be able to trade more than one of those other guys this year even with 50% retained. On something like this, maybe he could get rid of Petry or Savard at half off but I doubt both. Don't think anyone would touch Armia or Dvorak with multiple years left, even going through a second team at 75% off. If he can get something for Monahan or Desmith or Montelbault, he'd have all three retained slots to use next year and should be able to dump all three in a contract year with retention.

I don't know if NAS are ready to trade Saros and ride on Askarov's future. Might be their best move looking forward.
What would you trade to get Saros?

Goalies don't get a ton in trade. HArd to find one that really cost a team a huge package in teh alst few years. I think Saaros would be perfect for Devils but based on other goalie trades, think something like a 1st, Graeme Clarke, VAnecek, another B prospect, and conditional pick like a 2 or 3 that moves up a round if devils win cup. Maybe include a guy like Bastian to balance the money if needed. NAshville could probably play VAnecek for this year, maybe half of next before flipping him for a 3 or so and turning things over to Askarov.

Honestly, not willing to put a price tag on it yet as I do trust Schmid, it just takes time for a 23yr old to get the trust. He's already won a playoff series, so big monkey off his back there that it takes years for others to show they can do it in the playoffs.

Agreed. Monty imo is the starter going forward and they seem to be quite committed to him. I believe he'll tray and trade Allen and Petry with retention, and if he decides to trade Desmith and keep Allen, then that one final retention spot is used like he did last year as a 3rd party or if Dvo or Savy pop off.

So, my prediction is that...

Traded:
Petry(50%)
Monahan
Allen(50%) or Desmith

leaving in one scenario a retention spot for a Henrique or Myers, etc. The dream scenario is Allen, Petry, Monahan are traded.(and Armia wins the Rocket, but let's not talk abt that)

Traded in 2024-25:
Dvorak(50%)
Pezzetta
Kovacevic
