Overpaying for Nylander

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 30, 2023
Published: Aug. 30, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The more I think about it, the more I would love to see him suit up for the Habs.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Anderson, Josh ($2,750,000 retained)
  2. Guhle, Kaiden
  3. 2025 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Hope I don't get a bunch of Anderson hate. The last time I offered a Nylander trade, the comments were that the deal was fair but wasn't a win-now kind of deal. Anderson's 20-25 goals at 2.75 is not bad, and he was a beast in the playoffs.

If you believe Pronman's rankings Guhle is #51 on the list of players 23 and under in terms of having the best overall career

2025 1st is unprotected

No dog in this fight but I can’t see Montreal moving an unprotected future 1st rounder. I think top 10 protection makes much more sense

Might be right. I just don't see the Habs as bottom 10 in 2025

I don't see the Habs doing this, never mind retaining Anderson for the next 4 seasons, but paying Nylander that for the next 7 seasons....Can't see it IMO!
Lots of young guys coming up which you'll have to pay during that time, handcuffed for years to come.

Toronto isn’t trading Nylander, a third liner and prospect isn’t changing that.

Hab fans dreaming of unloading Anderson on the leafs is like making the playoffs for them

I like Guhle and think he'd be perfect on the top pair, Anderson at 2.75 is a steal and the 1st has top-10 potential. You may need to sweeten it a bit with maybe a Dvorak/Evans or prospect, but I think it's close to fair

Might be a fair trade, but really don't see why the Habs would do it. No guarantee Nylander would.

By mid-season Guhle would bypass McCabe on 2nd D-pair.

Anderson would provide about 75% of what you are gonna get from Bertuzzi.

The 1st will be a middle of 1st round pick in a very strong draft (2024 draft is crap compared to 2023 and 2025)

Guhle is nice, they already have Bertuzzi so why do they need 75% of another one, and the mid 1st means very little for a team in their position.

Why would Toronto trade arguably their best forward when they are trying to win a Cup with this group? This trade takes them further away.

Personally if I'm Toronto I'd take this offer then trade Anderson and Guhle.

I think with those two pieces (and Anderson having retention) + the extra cap space, we'd be able to get a top 9 guy to replace Nylander and a top 4 DFD without needing to move Brodie.

And I'd love to have more reason to cheer against Montreal if we have their unprotected 1st.

You think MTL in 2025 with Caufield, Nylander, Slafkovsky on the wings is a lottery team?

Nylander puts up 80 points. Caufield IMO is likely to become the next Boeser, just a great shot but no play driving ability.

Slaf is a joke, doesn't even feature on 90% of top 100 prospect rankings anymore.

I like this trade. I would have Anderson on my team at 50% retained. He would look good on the 3rd line.

Guhle would look nice on the D.

Even if this 1st is unprotected, I think it's a good trade.

    You're and ornery one eh?

Pronman ranked Slaf 25 and Caufield 11th in his under 23 rankings, and he generally hates small players.

Giving up on any prospect after his D+1 season is never smart.

What would Slafkovsky have to put up in his D+2 season to convince you that you've misjudged him, or are you just trash talking because he's a Hab?

Never saw his potential would say the same thing if he was any other team. Happy to have a kid prove me wrong but seems like Puljuarvi all over again. Solid 3rd liner, nothing more.

You did not answer the question though sir. "What would Slafkovsky have to put up in his D+2 season to convince you that you've misjudged him"?

What do you mean by misjudge?

For me to believe he has any chance of being a "star" #1 winger he'd need at least 60 points, almost everyone who becomes that hits 60 in their first/second season then climbs to 80+

For me to believe he can be more than a third line? Give me 35 points and I'd consider it a possibility that he ever gets to the 50 points or so that someone like Kerfoot/Garland who are high end third liners/low end 2nd liners can get.
