Hard pass, plus the Sabres don’t need Nylander and wouldn’t want to pay him 10 million and ruin the culture their trynna build

More silliness, trying to get value for a UFA. Leafs never had to pay high picks to acquire Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg, Samsonov and others. But somehow you want the Sabres to pay a premium.
Sorry these are just silly scenarios. By the way the Leafs will keep Nylander for this season's Cup run. Whether or not he resigns with the Leafs, meaningless at this time. And if he doesn't resign, the Leafs will just spend that cap on other players.

Teams trade for UFAs to subsequently sign all the time. Islanders gave the Canucks a 1st and a good forward to get Horvat last year.
It's a mistake to hold onto Nylander. I think Treliving learned from his recent experiences in Calgary. He's either getting re-signed or traded before the deadline.

which is never happening
While primarily a Sabre fan, over the past 5 years it has been painful to watch the Leafs get knocked out in the first round.
One can be consolled to realize the team that knocked them out four of the last five seasons, went on to the Cup final round.
While it is unlikely the trade above would be made, Nylander would be a huge upgrade over Olofsson while adding only $2,000,000 to the cap.
Put Olofsson on Tavares' wing and he may top 40 goals (look what John did for Matt Moulson!).
Unfortunately, the Leafs will need to find a GM who is willing to risk his job to make difficult decisions.
Next season the three highest paid Leaf forwards will earn $35KK.
Compare that to the Penguins, Oilers, Avalanche, Devils or Sabres top
five forwards at $30KK, $36KK, $36KK, $37KK and $31KK respectively.
There is no room if Willie wants $10,000,000.
Botterill hired the worse possible coach so he could tear down the team, obviously Treliving will not do that, but one of the core four has to go.
