Toronto isn't truly saving cap with that trade. They are wasting cap space and a 1st because it's going to go unused for the most part. Any team that is looking to trade guys at the TDL will be willing to take cap back, so if they trade Klingberg and a 1st, it will be for a player of high value not a 3rd pairing guy.

Any in-season trade is going to have money in = money out so TOR isn't going to have to "dump" Klingberg in the traditional sense. TOR can spend that 1st rounder on someone who has more impact than a depth defensemen like Seeler.

Where EDM is in the standings, it doesn't make sense to trade a 1st for a marginal upgrade from Foegele to Laughton. They have other issues to address and Laughton won't solve a lot of them.

Columbus could get a much better player than TK for that package. KJ is probably off the table in any discussion for a player, let alone adding a 1st for TK.

PHI lost the battle (the game) and they are losing the war (race to the bottom).

Many teams should eventually lose to the Sharks, would be incredible if they go 1-80-1.

I guess the current narritive on this site is that the leafs will have to pay premium draft picks to "dump salary" while other teams do not have to do the same - too predictable.

Imagine thinking any team, not just the leafs, would move a 1st and only get Nick Seeler back. With the lack of cap space league wide, non-contenders will have to take some contracts in trades.

Don't people on this site get tired of the nonsense spewed?

At least on this post, it’s not just the leafs, OP definitely is overvaluing cap space, and making trades that favor Philly.

To be fair... Konecny probably does take the team from "also ran/development year" to "competitive" considering it'sbeen the depth carrying the team so far. Columbus just shouldn't be making a move like this as they currently are.

Kinda silly to think adding TK and Laine to this roster isn't trying to be competitive with the backend acquisitions. Whatever. Stay in purgatory.

Edit: As for cap space, pretty sure going rate is 1st rounder for 3million. Seravilli or another pundit was quoted as saying that. So yes, Flyers should take advantage of cap space.

oops. double post. I'll just say a whole bunch of people rather stay in purgatory and keep potential good prospects than win now. Ok.

Columbus is the youngest team in the league, give or take a few months depending on who's up and who isn't for Buffalo. There is no reason to trade futures to rush a competitive window this season. Laine's out indefinitely, probably with a concussion. Neither Gaudreau nor Werenski look like themselves. The kids can't seem to do anything yet, and one of the top prospects was sent to the AHL because of it. The team is being carried by its fourth line and depth defensemen right now (and Provorov, so thanks for that win-win). The goaltending is a house of cards. Travis Konecny isn't the difference between sixth/seventh in the Metro and the playoffs for Columbus. Trying to launch from that unstable base is a recipe for disaster. This is just a team three years into a rebuild... continuing to rebuild.

While adding Laine and TK might be enough for Columbus to be competitive for the playoffs, it does not make them a cup contender. This trade negatively affects their team long term, without a realistic hope of a cup in the short term. Kent Johnson and a first hold more value to Columbus than TK for 2 years.

Commenting on the 3mil = 1 first value: if we assume this to be true, it is surely referred to as 3 mil of completely wasted space. If a player is making 5 mil, and is clearly not worth that much money, but is still playing at a 2 Million dollar value, does that make his cap dump cost the same as someone who’s cap cost is 5 mil but brings no on-ice value (healthy scratch/sent down)? When a player is being considered a “cap dump” you must consider the cost of replacing the player (how much that player should actually be paid). Klingberg and Foegele may be somewhat overpaid, but that doesn’t mean that their teams would pay for dumping their entire contracts, just roughly the difference between their cap hit and their actual value.

I don't see how long term 26yo TK with RFA right secured is a negative value. Yes he will command decent money but cap is projected to rise next year to 87M which could soften that burden. Those two top lines would be pretty legit.

Sure I understand the logic behind that. Ive been looking at taking on 3M in salary as a top pick. Maybe some thinking adjustments needs to be made to taking on 3M in long term for a 1st.

TK will be a UFA at the end of the 2024-2025 season. I don’t know where you’re coming up with this RFA rights nonsense.
