If things even pan out slightly how I desire them to, San Jose could be a competitive rebuilding team next year (not a 1st OA contender), and aiming for playoffs just over the horizon of 2024/25.

Leafs aren't giving up their 1st round pick for that.

Also, San Jose will not be competitive next year. Not even close to it. They are a few years away. Anaheim already had several high end pieces. San Jose doesn't nearly have as many as where Anaheim was (yet). Now if they get Celebreni, that will be a huge step forward.

Did I say a competitive playoff team or a competitive rebuilding team. Got to read carefully.
I never said the Sharks are going to be stealing playoff spots from anyone next year.

Being a competitive rebuilder is not being a shoe in for 1st OA. Being like 7th - 11th or something means theres progress compared to this year.
As our lineup will be even younger next year and wont be an "aging old team" selecting a tiny bit later than first, but a growing young team hopefully.

I expect San Jose to be a bottom 3 team next year as well. Unless they go out and sign a bunch of star UFAs.

Columbus passes on Hoffman. They've got nine kids in the AHL they'll bring in before making that move.

If San Jose selects 2-4 this year then they could bottom out again (I think whoever they select theresees AHL time). If they get to select Celebrini he may see AHL time but it's doubtful.
But this is near irrelevant to me due to a few reasons. This team could surprise next year.

1: Keeping Blackwood, if he can keep his current pace he is the goalie for the next 2-4 years for San Jose, hes just 26. Kaapo has also noticeably improved if you have goaltending knowledge/ its an interest, and watched him last year vs this year. I think SJS may keep both to provide stability.

2: Defense, and our new core. Currently; a major surprise for San Jose (which I dont knock anyone for not following SJS or watching the games lol) - has been Nikita Okhotiok. He was targted by Mike Grier and even myself (among many) overlooked him in the Meier deal. But he has been very promising and improving. He could become a fixture for fixing this core with Shakir Muk (also from NJD). Also, SJS has a ton of promising young D in the pipes many ranging from gambles with high rewards (Havelids and Thrun for example) to safe but low ceilings (Gawanke, Cicek, Pulli) - plus Luca Cagoni who is looking like a potential elite producer on D. If all goes really well this coming offseason for those who have been working hard SJS could have:

    Okhotiok - Addison
    Shakir - Placeholder or UFA
    Ferraro - Emberson/ Burroughs/ UFA

I legitimately think by this team next year Ferraro could be on the 2nd or 3rd pair if both Shakir and Okho keep trending the way they are, because they have only trended upwards since hitting SJS.

3: Will Smith, Gushchin, Eklund and maybe even Cam Lund or Bordeleau.
I dont want to include Lund or Bordeleau with these 3 but they may surpise me. Eklund has looked really good. And I think people forget he has under 40 nhl games. You've got a calder in Beniers, Sillinger whos near 200 games lmao. He's been over shadowed. But Eklund still looks like a superstar in the making. I don't know if he'll ever be a 110 point player like Stutzle, but guys like Nylander took some time to reach their stride. Smith has that star producing potential and elite 1C - some people have compared his potential to Marner but at C and less defensive. Gushchin could also be a major surprise - I could see him getting 35-45 NHL points this year.

I dont think the Sharks will be a world beater by any means next year - but I also think it's not unrealistic to foresee Anaheim's recent big leap ahead of schedule.

I do see all the prospect you are listing. But I don't see San Jose getting out of the bottom 3 next year. I hope they get Celebrini! That would make things fun for them. Will Smith is a very nice addition as well. They just need a few more pieces before they start to claw out of the bottom.

San Jose is in good shape with the prospects the have today…and they are likely to add a few more good ones at deadline and at draft. I think Grier has done well so far.

Smith, Bystedt, Mukhamadullin, Lund, Thrun…are all solid guys and if they don’t burn their rookie year this season, could make up a top-5 prospect pool in 2024 when you add a top-3 pick. Add in young players like Eklund, Zetterlund, Bordeleau, etc and it’s really promising.

They probably need another top-tier dman and a goal-scorer on the wing.

Wouldn’t rule out playoff run in 2025-26.

I think the Sharks would have bottomed out by now and been on the way back up, had it not been for acquiring EK65.

Giving up Stutzle AND Norris absolutely took the sharks prospect pool to zero for high end talent and any hopes of starting the rebuild process reset after that trade. I think San Jose has a long, hard road ahead for at least the next three years before they start to climb back out of the bottom.

Sharks wouldn't of drafted that high to get Stu if EK left and they resigned Pavs or others.

Bottoming out within 1-3 would obviously best case for the prospect pool - but I also think trying to instill a winning culture is just as important as picks - and its what we saw with SJS nearly 20 year run of being a pinnacle for success. If NJD do well we could have 3 firsts, and I hope Grier targets a 4th.

Picking 4 times this year should be enough to warrant trying to not bottom out next year. Select BPA with our first or the RD Artyom, select a RD if we get Celebrini next, select a pure scoring player, select a goalie or a BPA.

I am also looking forward to seeing what Gannon Laroque can do in the Pros, and I think Cagoni could be be a elite producer in NHL (his PNHLE from dobber is also funny to look at, just a skyrocket to superstar)- again I really want to see what he can do in AHL as well. My next hope for Grier is to see what he can this TDL because it'll be quite important.

I think he needs to keep both our goalies. And I am interested to see how he handles the roster. I think we MUST trade Barabanov, Hoffman, Duclair, and 1-2 D. As were seeing right now, Okho is working hard with his opportunity and trending positively. Shakir looks super comfortable in the AHL and is producing quite highly. Thrun has taken a small stepback from where he was - but I still believe in him.

If we're looking at it too:

    Ferraro - Addison
    Shakir/ Okho - Placeholder/ Emberson/ Burroughs
    Okho/ Shakir - Repeat of above/ Rutta
    Thrun
    Knyzhov

I think he's going to have to commit to certain LD sooner rather than later and maybe flip one of Thrun/ Knyzhov into a RD (if we get to select first hopefully) and wont be selecting Artyom.

It'll be exciting to see how he decides to go but there are certain traps I hope he doesnt stumble into (moving our goalies, moving Ferraro, signing Barabanov or Duclair).
