What Would Gudas Cost - What does Brad move for Ferraro

Created by: yikes
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 8, 2023
Published: Dec. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think TOR overpays on both trades - how do we make them work? I don’t think they’re brutal trades (maybe they both are lol idk).

I just love that DCore for the Leafs cup run.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Gudas, Radko ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
How much would Gudas cost? I see it as more than Zaddy or slightly more (3rd + 5th). I also see Toronto wanting retention.

ANA has zero of their three slots used. They also have money consistently coming off the books and don’t have any notable raises coming within 2 years in my eyes, and they’re already the 2nd lowest cap team.

Toronto meanwhile should be a win now team - which better fits their timeline than Gudas with ANA. I’m also choosing to move prospects here rather than all picks - then giving the Leafs another upgrade on the LD. We’ll get to that.

First - I’m including Timmins purely for contractual and roster reasons. He carries little value in the deal, if anything he’s helping pay for the Gudas retention. 1m x 3y (3m retained) shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, but the term is making it probably just around a 3rd/ prospect.

I’m going to offer Timmins and Ty Voit for the retention alone.
Next I’m going to offer the Ducks - a 2023 3rd round pick.
So right now with retention the Ducks are getting:

- A young RD with some upside (not a huge value)
- A quality prospect (arguably a top 4-5 leafs prospect)
- A 3rd in 2024

So I feel we need to offer a little more.

I’m going to offer Easten Cowan - a great prospect. But now the deal feels very ANA favourable.

So I’m going to increase the retention on ANA end.

Now we have 6m retained for:

2 of the Leafs top prospects - Cowan a very intriguing prospect, the ceiling isn’t the sky but his floor is great and he’s definitely got a lot to like. Voit who could be a 2nd-3rd liner with offensive presence, Timmins who has upside and a 3rd.

I don’t see any world where the Ducks can be upset by this offer. If anything TOR is overpaying - but that’s why we’re having this conversation. So let me know.
ANA
  1. Cowan, Easton
  2. Timmins, Conor
  3. Voit, Ty
  4. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
2.
TOR
Next Brad Tree calls the Sharks.

Let’s be clear - all experts and reports suggest Ferraro won’t be moved unless it’s for a ransom/ EXPENSIVE cost.

Ferraro himself voiced he wants to stay in SJS, Elliotte reports not only will it be expensive but the Sharks won’t get good assets - they’ll get great assets for him, if he does get traded. This is furthered clarified by the Canes already taking a big swing at Ferraro and failing to get him.

We can also add to this, with the knowledge that whatever all think about Ferraro - he arguably has 250-500 more games of good hockey in him at 25yr, 3m AAV and has 2 more years, and hinted that he would take team deals to win. He’s a vocal leader, loved player internally, regularly plays 25+ minutes, blocked shot leader consistently, and hasn’t had a good pair mate since Burns (Ferraro didn’t jive with EK65, EK65 fit perfectly with Megna/ Middleton).

I think Ferraro has a lot more to offer but I have an eery feeling that Grier wants to trade him to get Thrun back in the NHL. That’s just my gut feeling. And again it’s constantly being reported by sources it will only be for a near certain high value return.
    SJS
    3.
    TOR
    1. Ferraro, Mario ($1,000,000 retained)
    SJS
    1. Niemelä, Topi
    2. Reaves, Ryan
    3. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
    Additional Details:
Reaves is sent to some random team or a dump from TOR - I just assume some third party takes him, I don’t think SJS want him but he carries slightly below to no value.

    *Lottery Protected first*
    Reaves is basically a dump.
Topi + the first for a RETAINED Ferraro
Money costs and similar to the GUDAS deal - TOR doesn’t want to lose their 2026 first or a ton of picks and so Brad Tree moves prospects.

What changes what’s on the table?

Would Minten move over Cowan? Who else holds value near the three (Minten, Cowan, Topi) - I don’t see much more from their pool.

I would love to get Gudas but he has a full no move clause this year. I was hopeful the Leafs would sign Gudas AND keep Schenn. But here we are.

I don't think Ferraro is a good fit for the Leafs though. We need to get bigger/more physical AND we need to be able to move the puck better from our back end. Ferraro doesn't provide either of those 2 things really.

I think he waives for TOR.

Gudas loves playoff hockey - and the Leafs have a real shot with him. Thoughts on the value?

Gudas gets physical and bigger - and he can actually play some great hockey and snap the puck a little. Ferraro can move the puck well (not great/ amazing) and skates well. Blocks shots and eats minute and never quits. If it was just Ferraro then I get yah but Ferraro-Gudas? Kinda nasty imo. Thoughts on the value too?

How dumb would Trevling look trading for Gudas when he could have could have for free as UFDA?
Gudas and Ferraro aren't worth their contracts long term.
TDL trades are usually a waste for the "buyers". Just look at the Leafs, been buyers for seven years and have one playoff round win to show for it.

I didn't even look at the value until now. ZERO shot we trade Easton Cowan for Gudas. OH NO.

Leafs might move niemela, but Minten and Cowan aren’t going anywhere

Treliving went after Gudas as a UFA, as did the Oilers and another Canadian team. Did any of you read WHY he rejected the Canadian teams and CHOSE to sign with Anaheim? He doesn't want to play for a Canadian franchise. That's why his contract has so much trade protection baked it.

As to the offer, you want us to eat $6 million and deplete a necessary piece of our blue line for that? Do you know how those pieces compare to the prospects/young players we already have in our system?

Anaheim accepts Cowan and never looks back. Kid is looking like he is a serious stud.

But yes I know Gudas turned down Toronto. I wanted him but he didn't want us. This deal doesn't make any sense for the Leafs.

Lots of undersized forwards score a ton in Juniors and don't pan out at the pro level. Having Gudas on our roster to mentor our young LHD in Mintyukov, LaCombe, and eventually Zellweger is more important to the future of the franchise than Cowan.

Cowan ALMOST made the Leafs roster out of camp this year. He outplayed guys like Robertson by a substantial margin. They had to force themselves to send him back to juniors, since he is so young. Kid isn't that small either. He is just a late bloomer in terms of puberty. Trust me, Anaheim accepts this deal and figure out how to get another mentor for their young guys. Leafs would never make this trade though and Gudas never waives either.

He avoided Toronto in FA. Think he even said in an interview he wouldn't want to play here.

Not saying anything about the value, but the Sharks won't even consider retaining on Ferarro. They're already retaining on Burns and Karlsson, they won't lock up their final retention slot for multiple years.
