Rebuilding even with unrealistic trades

Created by: vbolshakov
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 17, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I truely believe for the last 2 years that we need to rebuild the team. It's not just last 0:7 last game. Pens maximum possible result this year is a second WC spot and leaving the play-off in round 1.

We have a very low pool of prospects, especially in the offence. We are only lucky by chance will goalies. Pens management still believes in miracles, and most of these trades won't happen any way but what do ypu think folks?

Edmonton trade
- Rust to Edmonton? He has a good season, and he can play very well with top centers.
- Campbell will stay until summer. Pens will buy out his contract.

New Jersey trade
- NJ need to ween here and now and improve their defence line. Pettersson is a person they need. With 2MM retained, NJ has to pay with 2 young forwards that Pens need.

Letang to Habs
- Yes, I know this is not realistic. However (1) Habs need a 1RD, (2) Letang is great as a mentor for a great group of Habs young D. And, yes, he is old.
- Dvorak has a negative value. Pens can give him a second chance and ice time. Worst case, he will go away as a free agent in 2025. An ideal case - long time 3C after the rebuilding is complete.

Malkin trade
- Malkin is the best possible 2C for Colorado. He is still very effective offensively and will finish this and next season with 60+ points. He is bad playing defensively but other Colorado players will compensate for that.
- Girard has a zero value at the moment. Zero players completed the NHLPA player assistance program and had a successful career after that. Meanwhile, he can be Pens' first-line D. This will be a good career restart for him.

Guentzel trade
- He can be extended by Pens for 7 years prior to the trade. Here could be any team with a price: 1st round + top9 player below 25 years old for 50% retention and contract extension prior to the trade.

Eller, and EK67 will leave in 2024-2025 season.
- Eller on a 2025 deadline
- EK67 with 50% retained salary in summer 2024

Well, Pens can live well without a second round peak but we need these 2 prospects

you undervalue Pettersson. He is the best D-man in Pens and one of the best in NHL. I mean, D-man playing in his zone, not as a 4th forward.
Plus, NJ will pay only 2MM to him for 2 years.

NJD would really love Pettersson if there was any way to do it without holtz. Replace holtz with a 1st, take out the 3rd going back to NJD, and I’d add Colin miller who you could play or flip and then maybe even another pick if that’s what it took

Rebuilding without trading Crosby huh? That's not gonna happen. Do you realize he wouldn't want to stay if you traded all his teammates away...

I like Pettersson more than most and would love him on the Devils but there's no way he'd return a budding top 6 winger still on his ELC in Alexander Holtz.
Removing Holtz completely from your suggested trade is honestly closer to fair than with him in it.

Take out Girard and the Avs say yes. Since he has zero value, I'd assume you're OK with that.

Nah Pettersson at 2 mill costs. Replace Holtz with a 1st and take out the 3rd going to NJD

Clarke+1st for Pettersson. 2nd for retention

Thanks but no thanks from the Avs. We'll keep our guy with zero value in preference.

The NJ trade seems fair. Devils fans will hate it but so will Pens fans.

The Edm trade is bad. Rust is a 1st line RW so he is probably worth a 1st by himself. Campbell has the worst contract in the NHL, so he would need 2 1sts (at least) to move. Ned has been playing well enough for a 2nd or 3rd. I also really like Zohorna. So Edm would have to add at least another 1st and a 3rd. Then maybe more based on how good the prospect is (I don't know prospects).

I agree, only Rust will age. He still has 5 years of his contract. Without salary retention I would not get much for him.

I hope Devils will have a good playoff, so this 1st will not bring much value. Pens need a ready to play winger to develop himself and play next to Crosby. What about Mercer? Based on stats he stoped progressing in NJ.

Captan has the biggest value on return but he will not go anyway even in my “unrealistic” post. He won everything already and I can see him developing young players during rebuilding stage

Malkin doesn’t have that kind of value anymore. Girard is in the PAP he didn’t get hurt and he was playing well before he stepped away, just because he decided to get help doesn’t make him worthless, what an asinine assesment. Teams don’t give 1st rd picks, top 4 dmen, top d prospects and a functional middle 6 center for a 37yr old center. Unrealistic, nah delusional.

They’re going to commit to not rebuilding no matter how silly that is. I can see a Jake trade before the deadline though if we stay on our current pace.

Yes, Rust will age but he is only making 5MM a year. Even if the last 2 years aren't 20+ goals, he would still be a good PK guy. He is more than worth his contract. Look at his advanced stats, he is a top 20 player year in and year out. You don't have many 20+ goal guys who play like he does and are signed for 5MM. He is worth more than a 1st in my opinion.

Even then the Avs wouldn't have any interest. Cap wouldn't work and I think the only C from PIT the Avs would have interest in would be Sid. They also don't really have any RD prospects.
