Petry finally got to the team he wants to play for, he won't leave Detroit especially since his cap hit is insignificant to them and their future plans.

Kostin might be available

If Det isn’t making the playoffs, he is at an age where he might try and make a run? All just opinion, you may be right but could help the Leafs in a playoffs run

Petry has a M-NTC and has publicly stated he wants to play in the states, which means every Canadian team is likely on his NT list.

He might want to go for the cup but, since COVID he's been fairly desperate to go back home to the states and more specifically Michigan where he grew up Detroit where his dad played for the Tigers.
I think he for sure closes out this season in Detroit and reevaluates what he wants at next years deadline if Detroit has improved even more by next year

That's probably fair value to move Samsonov with 50% retention. But can't imagine the Hawks would be interested. Mrazak has been very good so far, and despite his poor play, the Hawks want Soderblom getting steady playing time.

I'd like this as Detroit, but
A) Toronto doesn't do this
B) Do you think Petry waives his NMC so he gets moved from the town where he likely settles in? He's from here and his dad works for the owner of the Red Wings as a Tiger's broadcaster. It certainly seems as if he wants to settle down.

Don’t even have to play him. Send him to the minors or double retain and get a better draft pick at TDL

I don’t know Petry’s personal life, just trying to make a fair evaluation to make sense for both teams. Det isn’t far from TO, so if he was, we might be one of the options

If he isn't playing in the NHL, his value at the trade deadline, even with double retention, is going to be minimal. Hawks wouldn't waste one of their two retention slots on what Sammy would get back in a deal.

Still think the return is worth burying him in the minors when you have the cap space available.

Yeah, maybe. Although with all the picks the Hawks have in the next 3 drafts (27 as of now), not certain adding another 4th and 5th rounder is that necessary.

But it’s pretty much free. Just borrowing cap space that you are not using.lol. Doesn’t have to be Chi. Just a team with left cap room.

Samsonov might be needed by the Leafs. Let's say the Leafs go with jones and Woll, and another injury occcurs, they don't have any Marlie with NHL expereince.
Jarnkrok and Brodie for Tanev and Coleman is an trade, and with Tanev's retention even in cap. Coleman has been good this season, but geez 3 full seasons at 4.9m may not be. bargain compared to 2.1m Jarnkrok

Kostin hasn't shown he's a NHL winger and where would he play for the Leafs?

Petry is no where near worth Liljegren, Niemla, two thirds and a fifth.

Your Samsonv is fair to both teams. It's only a cap of 1.75m going to the Hawks, and with the season half over , it's really just 800,000 in cap and money

IMO Petry isn't worth Lilegren, Niemela, two thirds, and fifth. Petry isn't worth that at all.

At this point I’d be willing to give Hildebeast some starts to get his feet wet while backing up Jones until Woll gets back. Would be good experience for him and Sammy(if not traded) could be sent to the minors to gather his thoughts.
We need to add some size and physicality in the bottom 6. Assuming Reaves won’t be playing in playoffs, would be nice to have some tough guy presence in the lineup.

Petry literally said that the boarder restrictions and the way the Canadian government handled COVID he wanted to be in the U.S. and closer to his family. I read somewhere that the Petry's felt like the Canadian government blew the COVID crisis out of proportion. It isn't just about being close to home, it is about him not wanting to be stuck in Canada away from his family if something similar happens again

I mean maybe, but I'm 99% sure he forced his way to Detroit so he can start to settle down.

Petry's going to retire as a Red Wing, whatever year that's going to be.
