I’m convinced there is no lottery.

It’s an auction/arrangement behind closed doors.

It isn’t rigged, any teams owner can bid. From their perspective it is entirely fair. If it were rigged, a dozen of them would be impossibly resentful over Bedard.

They just give us peons ping pong balls.

If it was an auction, None of the small teams would ever win a lottery.

Honestly I say to make things more interesting just have it the day of the draft. Where we see them on stage load all the names into the ball and then do the thing live

Would make day 1 longer yes but at the same time would be more interesting and lower the whole its rigged stuff as it makes it harder to do it

The most chaotic way to do the draft lottery is to have it evenly random. Every team that didn't make the playoffs has the same chance to pick 1-3.

That only incentivizes middling teams to remain middling teams. Bad teams want weighted odds (to win lotteries). Good teams want bad teams to tank (to take their players at selloffs).

The only people saying or believes the lottery is rigged are triggered fan boys who are under 12 years old

There's evidence before lotteries have been rigged and we really never get the full scope of what goes on. To avoid any doubt doing it live on stage in front of a group of prospects, their families, and teams management groups will help remove those doubts

Every NHL lottery team has reps at the draft, that’s good enough, if none of them have believed once, while being there live that it’s rigged, you’re good, no need to change it

I was looking at Stanley Cup champs odds on Bovada and I must ask on why is Florida at only +1000? I feel with the way they are playing they should at least half that (+500).

Does anyone know - if a team acquires somebody who has performance bonuses on their deal, and that player has already met the conditions of the bonuses, is the team who signed him on the hook for that money next year or the acquiring team?

i.e. If the Leafs traded for Connor Brown, who after 10 GP with the Oilers secured his performance bonus of $3.225m which is to be tacked onto next years cap, does that count against the Leafs cap or the Oilers?

It counts against the team the player was with when the bonus was earned.
As soon as Connor Brown played his 10th(?) game, his bonus was applied to Edmonton.
If he is traded to the Leafs, the bonus stays with Edmonton.

That's what I figured, it seems to make the most sense. You got a source for that?

Just did a quick search since the game is about to come on.

Quote:
Performance bonuses count against the salary cap as soon as they are earned. If there’s cap space to absorb them, great, we never need speak of it again unless you’re a luxury car salesperson, and you have the player’s phone number.

If the end of year cap space isn’t enough to absorb the bonuses actually earned, then the excess is rolled into the next year and counts against the salary cap, eating into the space just like retained salary or an overpaid player in the press box does.

https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/the-basics-on-nhl-contract-bonuses-maple-leafs-contract-slide-signing-bonus-performance-bonus/

If I remember later I'll look for something more official.

Basically performance bonuses are a running tally that accumulate as they are earned.
At the end of that season you subtract remaining cap space from that amount and the remainder is a carryover.
The team that is presumed to benefit from that player reaching a performance threshold, is the one to which the hit is applied.
Brown's performance bonus was for his first 10 games, and Edmonton was the beneficiary of those first 10 games, so they are responsible for that bonus.

Updated since post but here you are:

Edmonton +700
Florida +800
Boston +850
Vancouver +850
Carolina +950
Colorado +950
Dallas +950

Only other team shorter then +1300 is the New York Rangers at +1100. Odds at Bovada.

Is just numbers. It doesn’t have feelings.

Odds are just the money flowing.

A big chunk of the flowing money is based on data models.

The data models don’t care what the team names are.

The official information may not be available (or I've overlooked it).

I do have anectdotal confirmation from a more legitimate source however.

The Panthers will pick up the full prorated remainder of Jagr's $3.5 million salary, but the Devils are responsible for his $2 million games-played bonus, which he has already achieved, Lamoriello confirmed to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.
