If there was ever a player that was less of a "Todd MacLellan guy" than PL Dubois, it's Patrik Laine.

You do know that Dubois previously played in Columbus and that didn’t go so great right? They have also previously been traded for each other…

Of course I know.

That's why I made this AGM ...

It's not looking too great with Laine either.

The difference between them is that Laine just can't stay healthy while PLD has no interest in playing hockey.

Roslovic and a 3rd?

Unlikely trade, obviously, but I would think PLD has a bit more value as I think his floor is still a bit safer. And he probably has more transferable skill set from system to system. But if LAK wanted to do this to free salary up, maybe they end up adding.

PLD ($1m retained), 1st
Laine ($3m retained), 3rd

(But unlikely scenario)

I'm not sure how PLD can possibly be viewed as safer by anyone in any way at this point. He's clearly not working still after getting exactly what he apparently thought he needed in order to play up to his potential. Now anyone who takes him on is risking 7 years of paying a 40 point 3C like an 80 point 1-2C. At least with Laine the issue is durability and not performance outside of like 10 games this season.

Dubois is still scoring at higher rate in 5v5 minutes than Laine this year and is not defensive liability. His contract has more term, but I imagine a lot of teams would still feel safer putting him on ice. Laine will have the edge on power play, but also has more injury risk. So team need would factor as well.

I think both sides have valid arguments. But my view is Dubois is safer with higher floor, but has harder contract to move.

Your belief that Laine is a defensive liability is outdated. Check his advanced stats and he's more than adequate defensively over the last few years. You're also comparing 5v5 scoring rates on the most cherry picked possible range. This season for Laine is comprised of 18 games where the team was struggling under the whole coaching situation and his recovery from a significant concussion. The previous two seasons he has significantly outscoring PLD at 5v5 and over the course of their careers as a whole.

people love to ignore that laine's 82 game pace was 35-22-79 over the last two seasons and health was the only thing holding him back. i think he's been majorly set back in his mental game as a result of the injuries and messing with his position (and him wanting to change positions) but to think his game hasn't been there in columbus is such a lie.
