I mean he is a good player but given the $, term, and cost it would take to get Parayko i dont think it makes sense for Ottawa. We could use a defensive minded player like parayko sure, but I think we could get one cheaper that might fit the timeline better

That's what I thought, but I keep hearing rumours around them listening to calls from Calgary on him.. great player.

St Louis has several aging D on long contracts. I would be all over this if I were them. I know Mokumbo would highly disagree with me though. He loves Parayko.

The idea is to remove the other contracts. Not the only one that is worthwhile having long term.

First I doubt Parayko is available. Our goal and it seems like it's the front offices as well is to build around Parayko which means shipping out the other contracts. If by chance we are trading Parayko it would signal a full rebuild/teardown. Doubt Chychrun would be of interest as he only has 2 years and would be looking for another massive contract if we were to trade Parayko.

Blues have a similar problem as the sens (Both need to clear out LD) but for different reasons.

Parayko is our only truly good defenseman and while I'm not going to act like there aren't concerns about his contract, I am willing to except his aging since we need him.

I get this. But he is going until he is 36-37. Get off that contract now... it's going to look bad. Getting Chychrun back would be super nice.

Does any believe that St Louis is a true contender right now? I mean this.

No, but it's not farfetched to think we can't be in 2-3 years. It's much more obtuse to believe we could replace Parayko in 2-3 years.

We could be in a few years. Also I think there is something to say about rebuilds/tanking creating a culture of losing.

He will be 32-33 at that time. That's when guys really start to decline. His contract will start becoming a boat anchor, right when you want to be competitive again. Maybe he is slower to decline though. If his decline starts at 34 that would be really nice for St Louis.

Either way I think Doug Armstrong put them in a terrible position with those 4 D men all signed for several more years into their mid to late 30s. Add the Schenn contract on top of that. I think he has done a bad job in that regard! All with full No Trade Clauses by the way....

His contract is extremely buy out friendly once he turns 35. Also the cap is going up. Boat anchor is a term that is incorrectly used for his contract. Even if he declines if we properly assemble a defense there's very lititle chance he falls below a #3. His defensive along with his skating alone will keep him in that conversation. It's a very bad misconception that every player falls off at that age range. Our issue is our collective pieces do not fit. We have Krug and Faulk who neither are truly reliable in the defensive zone, and then Parayko paired with Leddy eating the majority of opponents top competition in the defensive zone because Krug and Faulk cannot whatsoever, and we don't have a competent 3rd pair that can be used as minute eaters (which isn't all that uncommon).

Our biggest issue this year however, is our offense outside of Thomas/Buch/Kyrou is nonexistent and extremely inconsistent. Schenn is the closest thing we have to a boat anchor on our roster. In 3 years time Krug/Faulk/Leddy/Saad/Binnington all have their contracts expiring. This was understood when they signed. The issue is our core fell out of contention a year or two earlier than expected (Mainly due to the terrible job of reconstructing the d).

Why would you build around a slow, plodding defender who handles the puck like a grenade, can’t outlet the puck, and who has a cap nightmare contract?

Don’t know if you’ve noticed by the League has changed since the Paraykos of the world ruled. Quick, nimble defenders like Makar, Hughes are what you build around now. Not dinosaurs like Parayko.

Parayko is one of the best skating defenseman in the league. He doesn't handle the puck like a grenade either. However, he isn't great at outlet passing sure. The rest of it is a lazy bunch of nonsense.

Yeh every 10th shift he might decide to turn on the jets. Buts it’s rare. And it’s still not very quick. The reason he doesn’t do it more often is cause his processing of the game is only average, so he can’t find opourtunity to jump in and make those types of plays with his skates. Same reason he’s bad at outlet passing, he doesn’t see the game quick enough. And he has slowwww hands, he always gets stripped for that reason, and small quick forwards terrorize him. And he does handle the puck like a grenade with his slow hands too, often he stick handles to avoid pressure and still gets stripped.

He is though. Slow in processing the game. Which means slow boots cause he can never use his alleged good skating. Dudes slow as **** out there, hands, processing, boots, passing. Everything he does is a step behind the speed of the game today. There’s a reason that as the league gets faster, he gets worse. Him being a cap dump that no GM would touch speaks to this regresssion. And with back injuries and a never ending contract, it’s not getting better anytime soon.

Dude. Watch some hockey. Exactly none of this is accurate. Most of it woefully inaccurate. Some of it straight up opposite of reality.
