Personally I'd be happy with that. I don't think Laine was ever a fit here and I think cutting ties on that big deal and moving on, with 2 mil retained and adding Beck would be a smart move.

Goes without saying though that a Laine trade isn't happening anytime soon with him entering the player assistance program. Would be pretty surprised at it happening over the summer either considering that. On the hockey side of things though, I'd take that as a CBJ fan.

The road to redemption starts with admitting you have a problem. He’s doing the right thing. It’s not huge risk for the Habs, only two years of term left. It could be more salary retention, it could be less, and the return would be based for sure on how he’s doing. But with guys like Armia and Ylonen here, it could be a good place for him to get a fresh start.

Habs don’t really have anything the rangers need. Rangers need right wingers, hence keeping Kakko for now

What age range for a right winger? What role?

Top 6, ELC-age 28 probably. Rangers already have an old core

we all know Crosby trades are never happening.

But if you are going to make them, at least send the penguins something that is going to sell tickets. The day he leave is the day the arena is empty.

Agreed. It was a trade made under duress, considering how PLD decided to throw a hissy fit the moment the season started. His game rounded out a bit more with CBJ, but injuries depleted the stable D around him, and gave the young guys opportunities to pass him up, and I think they’ve taken it.

His season is likely over, and that is fine for getting the help he needs. With the cap going up, i think his hit is more palatable, and he could fetch a 1st, maybe a little more. I think Beck+ would be a good return on him.

Rather just buy out VV this offseason than pay that for another mid goalie.

Winnipeg 1st + Ylonen
Replaces Kakko in the bottom 6 and can use the 1st to pick up a top 6 RW.
(Not that I'd necessarily do it, but I think it makes sense.)

NYR aren't going to move Kakko unless the move helps them NOW. MTL doesn't have (or I should really say won't want to) give up the assets NYR would want to get him. Draft picks really don't do much as the player won't be able to help NYR for a few years. Most likely it would have the be a 3 way trade where MTL gives up assets to a team that has what NYR wants and gets Kakko in return, so unlikely.

For an in season trade, it would have to be one of Newhook, Slaf, Dach, Caufield, Suzuki coming back (which MTL obviously declines). For an offseason trade, Beck+mid pick could be a possibility depending on the health of Chytil.

“Replaces” Kakko when that isn’t 100% true. They don’t really need another pick that will end up going towards a rental

You can sign UFAs. Rebuild the draft. The same way you did with Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, etc.

That’s fair, it’s definitely an option, but I think the Devils can compete now, given the right goalie. The cap space is more valuable to you than draft picks, imho.

The Devils have no cap issues...they have Hamilton to put on LTIR if needed, he isn't coming back this season.

It’s a fair ask. Not sure we’d move the Winnipeg pick and Ylonen together, but both are probably in play.
Personally I’d offer either the Winnipeg pick. Or Ylonen and a 2025 2nd.

I agree fully that the Rangers are looking to win now. But Dolan seemingly doesn’t want to move his 1st round pick.
If you acquire the Winnipeg pick from us, then that can immediately be flipped for someone who can help you now.

Rangers were in on both Lindholm and Monahan but didn’t want to give up their first round pick.
I wouldn’t be overly concerned about “rental”, the Rangers have never had a problem getting players they wanted to keep to re-sign.

This is a post for next season. And if you’re trying to win now, every dollar of cap space is valuable.

Not by moving the assets that would be needed to get an actual good goalie by trying to move relatively easy money. He's less than $1.5m of cap hit against the cap. The Devils have no real cap issues next season.

Would cost the devils $1.5mm against the cap next year, and $1mm against the cap the year after that. So the question is what’s $2.5mm in cap space worth to your GM in a trade.
If it’s nothing, then it’s nothing.
As a fan, I’d rather have the cap space, and to be able to add to the team, to make a long playoff run. But people can think otherwise, no issues there.
