So COL needs centers and they are supposed to trade the their best face off guy for a winger? Who plays center after MacKinnon and Colton?

The retention is a straight no go for Colorado. They can't afford to do that. If the Rangers need retention, there will have to be a third team.

Otherwise, I do feel like Johansen + 1st for Kakko could have something to it.

Sharks decline.

Thrift shop somewhere else. 🙄

Sturm isn't a rental and Grier isn't retaining. 🤭

Not for a lousy 5th lmao
We retain for 1 1/2 years that’s a 2nd, 3rd or 2 4th with no retention

-Agree with the Avs fans upthread - the deal seems fine a vacuum, but moving Johansen out with retention doesn't save them any cap space - and now they have a hole at 3C. I think the deal would work if there was no retention on Colorado's end, because they could then go poking around to see what they could get to fill Johansen's spot with the $1.9M in cap savings.

-The way Vatrano is playing, I think he gets back a 1st + a solid prospect on his own. Add in a year and a half retention, and the price goes up. This is a starting point but there needs to be another solid asset added in, imo.

-It's okay, I guess? Ottawa probably doesn't care about Leschyshyn, but again, feels like a decent jumping off point that could be fair value if the market for Tarasenko doesn't coalesce.

-I don't know why Minnesota would do this one. Middleton is a very solid middle-pair guy on a relatively affordable salary that would probably bring back a strong return if they made him available, and I would say the Wild have three LHD currently in their system that are younger and have more upside than Zac Jones at this point. Feels like an easy pass for the Wild.

-Sharks pass extremely easily. Retaining on Sturm would tie up their last remaining retention slot for this year and next - if you're going to ask a team in a rebuild to do that, you better be offering a hell of a lot more than just a 5th rounder. And that's honestly before you get to Sturm - not gonna act like he's a superstar or anything, but he's a strong defensive player who's won more than 60% of his faceoffs this year - he'd easily bring back a 4th rounder on his own.

I'll say again: SHARKS HAVE ONE WIN IN THE NINETEEN GAMES THAT STURM WAS NOT IN THE LINEUP FOR.

You can point at his point totals all you want but he is a difference maker and GMs know that. Grier wouldn't let him go for this pathetic offer

Avs are better off buying him out at I think 1.3m and keeping the 1st. Kakko is cool but not a need.

Except then what are they doing for another C? To me, this feels like an offseason deal if there is one to be made.

Unfortunately, RyJo is really nothing more than a 4C (3C at best) on the Avs. And those can be had on the trade market. Getting rid of a poor fit and getting Kakko is a pretty neat idea imo.

So, giving up even more assets? Also, the Avs are kind of loaded on the right side. They can move someone to the other side but this feels like a move in need of a reason.

Getting a former 2OA who is under team control and cap space are good reasons. Depends on what you think of Kakko. It's risky, but it could turn out to be a steal.

I'm not too concerned about assets except for Ritchie and Gulyayev at this point. Especially if they are moved for a long term piece.

Bottom line, I don't see a savior at 2C coming anytime soon. No use saving assets for something that isn't there.

Value-wise it's probably fine and it gets us out of RyJo's cap hit (the retention would have to be a 3rd team however). BUT.....it still doesn't solve the issue for the Avs at C and in fact arguably makes it worse. So unless another trade is in play it should still be a no for the Avs.
