Jonatan Berggren+Olli Maatta_Detroits 2024 2nd round pick > Chris Tanev+Calgarys 2024 3rd round pick, Detroit definitely declines no interest in a 34 year old Tanev who will be out of the NHL by the time we're ready to compete.

Wow. These returns for pending FAs show little regard for the fact that the teams that acquire them will be viewing them as rentals or likely overpays (either salary or years or both) to keep them. A decision that teams will knowingly make, but it impacts the price that they pay.

The starting point with a premium player is a first and second or third. You can play around with amounts, prospects, retention, and long term salary takes to adjust the amounts

Forbort or Grz, Lohrei, and a pick for Hanifan retained at a level enough to make his salary the equal of the vet Boston D man is a deal structure that makes sense. If it’s a first, I think Boston takes the risk that Hanifan will make it to them via free agency. If it’s a second, that might be a consideration. Maybe tossing in a secondary prospect with talent to help find the midpoint in value between the first and the second
