Description
CGY deal logic:

Hanifin for Marino and a 3rd
- Replaces Hanifin with a similar player who is slightly younger and cost controlled. Provides RHD depth for when the inevitable Tanev deal trade happens. Retools to help CGY remain competitive instead of unknown futures.

Markstrom for Vanecek, Bahl, Gritsyuk and a conditional 1st
- Vanecek is for contract purposes. Bahl is a young 3rd pairing shutdown defenseman with great size; top 4 potential but unlikely. Gritsyuk is a top 6 potential fast skating winger currently killing it in the KHL. Draft pick originally stays as a conditional 2025 2nd, withthe condition being that it becomes a 2024 1st as long as the Devils don't make it to the '24 ECF. This is currently a condition in the Meier deal so the exact pick can't be establish until that is dealt with. Knowing this year, this is basically guaranteed to be a '24 1st.

I think Hanifin gets a tad bit more (CGY offered him 7.5 which he nearly accepted according to reports). Also Markstrom deal might be a slight overpay (isn't Marino a legit T4 D-man)?

Well I broke it down in my description at the top, but the logic is that the entire trade is broken up into two. Marino is sent to CGY to upgrade to an extended Hanifin. Marino himself, as with numerous players, are an absolute shell of themselves. Players like him and Siegthaler have been horrible in comparison to last year. Plus, having Dougie, the emergence of Nemec, and Miller being an excellent 3rd pairing guy (who we can probably resign for cheap), I think Marino is expendable.

Flames pass. Not interested in Marino and we don't have a RHD depth issue. Also not interest in another small winger prospect in Gritsyuk or an unguaranteed 1st

It's too little, He's already been offered 8 x $7,500,000 to stay in Calgary. And now it looks like he might even be asking for closer to $8,000,000 per long term.

Hanifin will probably get upwards of 7M. Bringing him in also makes signing Nemec + Luke to long term deals extremely difficult. Marino is also probably the devils most solid defenseman when it comes to just pure defense at the moment, moving on from him would hurt their dcore more than most think.

I would say for Markstrom your 2024 1st, Vitek Vanecek, one of Chase Stillman, Graeme Clarke, or Arseni Gritsyuk would get it done possibly with a little retention. Markstrom is good, but goalies do not go for as much as some people think.

Hanifan will want too long of a term contract that the Devils shouldn't target as they'll go term on Luke and Nemec.

Your RHD depth is Tanev (who will be traded most likely), Andersson, and Pachal who you just got on waivers. You most certianly do need NHL caliber RHD.

Did Sharangovich shrink?

Gritsyuk isn’t really small…

Problem with trading Gritsyuk is that we will never get full value for him. Only Devils will have full information on his development, when he comes over. This came up during Meier talks as San Jose had sent their scout to watch him.

He's below average in height. And Calgary has too many wingers already, especially below average hight ones projected for middle 6

Yeah, not small. And playing along boards is a strength…is Hischier-esque in pulling pucks off the wall.
