Trade Deadline

Created by: Blues4Life
Team: 2023-24 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 29, 2024
Published: Feb. 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
IF the blues are to trade Buch, I think we need to focus on a potential top 4 dman as the return. Potential prospects to aim for: Sandin Pellikka (DET), Edvinsson (DET), Nikishin (CAR), Willander (VAN).

I am sure DET will overprotect their prospects and say they'd never trade either prospect but gotta give to get, especially in the case of a PPG top line winger at $2.9M for 1.5 years.

Willander, Edvinsson, Nikishin = fantastic targets, if not actually the best three. Are they? Maybe. Will their teams come off them? Probably not.

I have less than zero interest in ASP even before we go into the hyper inflated price he would cost. Hardest of passes.

So even this trade package from Detroit would be a no from you? I understand if you aren’t an Asp fan and usually you have good takes. But turning down this package would be complete insanity

The Tampa trade sure seems like a lot of value for a 3rd, but I'm not sure how much any of those players really improve Tampa's lineup. Does Kapanen really upgrade their middle 6 scoring ability? Is Scandella better than either DeHaan or Lilleberg? I guess Tampa does it if this is the only deal available to them, but I think they try to make a deal more impactful than this.

"Gotta get to give"
> A 1st and a blue chip prospect for a top-6 winger who's a UFA in 2 years
lol

I don't disagree that Buch'll cost a pretty penny, but by no means will he fetch a top-20 prospect AND a 1st.

I mean Eliotte Friedman suspects he'll fetch two firsts, and no one in their right mind would trade Pellikka for a 1st.

I've talked about ASP with this guy before. I have no clue why he holds a vendetta against him, but he clearly does.

Buchnevich might get you the return you are hoping for especially if he's retained for next year too but DET has cap flexibility so that is not as big of an asset to them as someone like EDM or VGK. I just don't think the wings are a partner for him unless someone is coming off their roster like Fabbri. ASP, Kasper, Danielson, Edvinsson all not for sale. I think Yzerman likes his group and the roster is full too so it has to be addition by subtraction.

What are you on about? Failing to anoint him against all evidence does not = a vendetta. And much of the issue isn't even about how good he is or will be. It's about the Blues not looking for a small, offense only, poor defending Dman. We're already trying like hell to get rid of one. It's the last thing they want.

Absolutely not. Taking a package that is not what you want when plenty of other teams will offer better is the opposite of insanity. You have loads of excellent D prospects, and picked probably the last one the Blues would want, mostly because he is not the type of player they want. It's not always about what you think the "value" is, guys. There's other factors, namely fit. ASP does not fit. You have multiple other prospects who do fit very well.

Point proven lol.
I provided analytics that showed he was in fact very good. He won Defensemen of the Tournament, which even if he didn't deserve it; you don't even get considered if you're just "good". Its not hard to find articles that show that he immediately went into surgery after the WJC because he was injured, likely playing through it during the tournament.
Not gonna argue about it since you're just so caught up on your vendetta.

For your sake, here's to hoping Buch returns more than what Friedman predicts (that's around two 1st round picks)!

Whether or not it's the right prospect for the Blues is a different argument that I know isn't your biggest gripe about him lol.

I'm sorry, what "analytics" did you show me for him? I don't recall.

He was not even on the team of the tournament, which is chosen by those who watch all the games. The best position awards are chosen by the suits who organize the event. They're businessmen, they don't know crap. And it's impossible to avoid that ASP was somehow a -2 on Sweden's team, that he was awful in the gold medal game, that at least three of his Sweden D teammates had significantly better tournaments. That's all reality. None of those takes are even warm.

And again, more to the point, save the "vendetta" act. Nothing about anything I've ever said about him qualifies as a vendetta. It's just a weird accusation, to be honest. Like OMG who dares aptly criticize the anointed one?!?! Even though basically everyone and their mothers says the same exact things I do.

Look man, I completely agree on the value vs fit argument. However, if you get offered Asp and a first, there’s no way you don’t take it. If you don’t want Asp, you trade him for probably 2 1sts and boom - you have a way better return than anyone is going to give you.

Maybe the Blues are asking for someone else, but Edvinsson is a non starter. So if you want Johansson and a first, sure it’s more likely from both sides, but hypothetically you’re massively cheating yourself on value

Buch isn’t the target for Detroit. Detroit needs defense specifically on a RHD that can help Seider’s utilization. The cap retention also wouldn’t be necessary and I doubt Buch will return the amount proposed in this.
