Major offseason changes- building off TDL

Created by: Jacketsman61
Team: 2024-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 25, 2024
Published: Feb. 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Jackets may not be as far off from contending as people think. With a few moves the Jackets could be a very formidable opponent as soon as next year.

SJ needs young talent. They could use a blue liner and could use another really promising young winger. This trade hurts the CBJ but addresses the C position that has plagued this organization since inception.

Laine needs a change of scenery and Montreal could use a proven goal scorer. Montreal needs to take the next step forward. The price is high but they do get him for 2 years.

I think signing Duchene would be absolutely worth 5 mil a year. Duchene’s face off ability would help take pressure off Fantilli and allow Fantilli to play more and continue to develop.

Note: I would say Laine could go to any team depending on who is willing to give up the right value but Montreal just seems like a team that could actually do it.

If Montreal was paying that price for a change of scenery guy, it sure as hell wont be for Laine.

Do teams ever go from 29th place to becoming a ‘formidable opponent’ in one year 🧐. I have my doubts

It has happened within the same season before. Not that I think the Jackets are anywhere near that though.

Bean is a low cost guy. Without Sergachev, the Bolts will be looking for a LD with some offensive talent. This is exactly the kind of trade TB would make. Plus, Bean is a RFA, which means they could keep him if he works out.

Laine still has a lot of value. His season was interrupted by some pretty bad circumstances. He started fast until Andersson of Calgary decided to cheap shot him, he came back and was starting get back in a rhythm until he got slew foot and broke his collar bone. I think Montreal seriously looks at this. A guy that is proven over players who are not proven.

Laine career may be done. You are selling low not high in the offseason. No one wants him in Montreal and he goes against everything they've preached in the org. Justify it all you want but unless he rebuilds his value with consistent production, you'll be looking at a Jesse Puljujarvi situation.

You're asking for one of the top goalie prospects from last draft (and a top NCAA goalie), a 1st, a former 1st prospect/young NHLer and an early 2nd prospect. For a guy who can't stay healthy, and is paid too much money for not a lot of term. From a team that started rebuilding after Columbus. I won't get into issues of trading a guy who has struggled with mental health to one of the toughest markets in the NHL. Or that Laine probably has Montreal on his NTC list. Or that Montreal has a ton of right shot wingers.

Montreal's interest in Laine would at best be doing Columbus the favour of taking the last two years of his contract in the hopes that he bounces back. If you want those kind of futures, its going to cost a lot.

The don’t have to move him. The point is the Jackets won’t trade him on the cheap.

Then they shouldn't move him. Most teams can't afford his cap hit anyways and there's no chance they get a positive return until he gets back and stays productive in the lineup.

we acquire hertl why? this doesn't make us anywhere near contending and jams fantilli further down the depth for the short and medium term, which is not where he needs to be to develop.

acquiring duchene as well takes any opportunity to keep voronkov in the top 6 when he's one of the league's best rookies and showing that he's got as much skill as size.

so now the cbj are gonna be a team in the wild card hunt for the next 3-5 years and when it would be time for all the young kids to pop and the old folks have worked their way out of the lineup, all of our young forwards are underdeveloped and we haven't had any more high draft picks.

Actually it makes a lot of sense. Hertl gives the Jackets a C with experience gives the Jackets a true 1-2 punch at C. This also gives the Jackets some sort of structure to find parts of the team that need to be fixed. Hertl can be moved down to 2C once Fantilli is ready to grab the 1C.

As far as Voronkov goes, if we can play him at 4C, this really gives the Jackets a huge advantage. He create scoring from the 4th line which just makes this team deeper. Duchene is just a great way for Fantilli to learn face offs while also getting a skilled player to play with.
